What Car? After an accident!
Discussion
Just as my insurance is due and my hopes of getting EP3 CTR I have had an accident which was my fault.
Im 22, will have 0 NCB after my insurance has been sorted and Im looking for something fun but affordable on insurance.
Currently drive a 2.0 Mk1 Focus (which I hate now)
Criteria:
20+ MPG is fine as I don't commute far for work
130+ bhp faster than the focus
5-6k budget
Something different maybe?
Reliable as Im not mechanically minded
I've been looking at Gen 7 140 celica, 306 rallye, fiesta st, lupo gti.
One that really interests me is the ST especially in white. Look great and reasonable on insurance (£1000). Heard they lack torque but great in the twisties. After a year get it Mountuned 185 and it will be a fun little car.
Any thoughts on the ST or other reasonable choices?

At 22, after an accident, you should be looking at a 1.3 Fiesta. Getting insurance after an accident for £1000 is unlikely, if not impossible.
My housemate couldn't get insurance for less than £2k after he binned his Astra. He's 36, and currently driving a mid-90's diesel Astra which is worth half the insurance bill.

Currently own a 140bhp Celica (03) plate & to be honest, your 2 litre Focus will in all probability be A) faster & B) handle better. Its easy on the eye (in a sub £3000 way) but that & its reliabiliy are its on;ly redeaming features. In addition, its a group 13 & for the performance, there are many better cars out there - hence thats why Im looking to upgrade to a 350Z.
If you like coupes though, how about a 2 litre Hyundai Coupe ? Much the same as the Celica BUT only Group 10 insurace. Alternatively, I agree with the previous poster, at your age & with a previous fault accident behind you, your going to struggle to get anything with any real performance with a reasonable premium.

Are you talking ST170 or the MK2 ST with the 2.5 turbo?
The ST170 doesn't feel a great deal faster than the 2.0 Zetec. Slightly more torque and 1000rpm extra at the top end. Nice cars if you can find one with all the toys though.
The MK2 ST is heavier, but I wouldn't say it lacks torque.
edit: Just noticed you're talking about the Fiesta ST. Of which I have no knowledge. Doh.

Stupid question but... - have you considered paying the claim and keeping your NCB (your premium will still rise because you've an accident but if you pay the third-party's costs, you won't lose your NCB).
NCB is usually 25/35/45/55/65% - so let's assume your premium was £1000 before discount and you had 3 years of NCB.
If you claim, you lose NCB, so your next premium would be 1000 then 750, 650,550,450,350 = 3000 over 5 years.
If you DON'T claim, your next premium is 450 (4 years NCB) and then 350,350,350,350 which is 1850.
That's assuming no increase in premiums over that time (highly unlikely) so in reality the saving will be greater!
On that basis you'd be better off shelling at least £1000 now to keep your NCB... If you destroyed a Phantom or someone's house - maybe that's not enough?

I'm slightly surprised at your comments on the Celica. The handling of my T-Sport is great. Good driving position, reasonably sharp steering and good feedback inspires confidence to chuck it around on twisty roads. It's not as sharp or chuckable as an MX5 but still fun all the same.If you like coupes though, how about a 2 litre Hyundai Coupe ? Much the same as the Celica BUT only Group 10 insurace. The main complaint about them is the slightly spongy brakes. Uprating the pads, hoses and using some good 5.1 dot brake fluid goes a good way to sorting this out though.
My advice would be to consider your insurance costs and get out and test drive some cars to see what you think of them.
Thanks for all the comments
, I tried the non insurance route but I caused over £2000 of damage by going into the back of a X5 at 15mph....lease car too so HAS to go through a BMW garage
and I cant afford that in one lump sum.
I entered my exact same details on go compare but with no claims and an accident and it came out at around £1000 for the ST. The 306 Rallye was the same not tried the others. It might be more if I ring Elephant up.
Ive considered Celicas but prefer the ST more. Plus my mate works for Ford so can get cheap parts and labour.
Cant really think of anything else 'Warm Hatch' tbh.

I'm in a similar boat to yourself, young and on the wrong side of the insurance database. Never had any accidents but my Post Code kept me in BHP per ton poverty.
I'm sure you know all the insurance talk of do this and not that, call here etc so ill leave that out.
for cars - I'd try E36 318iS (they're cheap but you can use the spare cash for putting gremlins right like some cosmetic/mechanical love) but you get a planted revvy block. Won't see which way a CTR goes even up a hill but it was reasonable on insurance and loads of fun when pushing on.
As mentioned, S1 106 Rallye, ST24 V6 Mk2 Mondeos friends have had these insured cheaper than Saxos/106s.

you're being a bit optimistic with the list of car OP to be honest. Having had an accident you need to be looking at very cheap not very powerful cars as your premium will raise dramatically. The only insurance you may find to be cheaper is kit car insurance. As one of the posters on here mentioned, why not go for a Westfield, there are loads of ones for sale each with different engines and will outperform any of the cars you listed, and is likely to be lower in insurance, so long as you can do without a roof

Just FYI - the decision as to who repairs the car is in the hands of their insurer, nothing whatsoever to do with the lease company (or the third-party owner) - you don't get to choose stuff like that...
What might gaul you is the fact that a £2000 quoted repair will cost your insurer about £1200ish tops. That's because the 'quote' is done on a fixed-hourly-rate and includes full-MSRP parts prices but the insurer gets a discounted rate (usually 50-60% of the fixed-rate) and expects most (or even all) of any discount that the bodyshop gets on parts (which is anything upto 60%)

Yeah but if I can afford something decent then why not? The comparison website wouldn't be wrong would it? Westfield or anything like that would be impractical for daily commute and I cant afford to own/insure two cars.
Ill just have a look around and see what comes up local, sure I will find something fun!
I would make an actual phone call and speak to a couple of insurance companies.
I had a serious crash when I was 18 and most insurance companies would not touch me, those who would (on a 1.4 Golf match) it was nearly 2K!!!
Find out before you set your sights on something as you may end up disappointed.
On the other hand, I can highly recommend the Lupo GTI. I owned one fro 2 years and loved every minute of it. It's not as small as it looks and it loves corners!

How on earth have you got quotes of £1000 for an st at your age?
I had a crash earlier this year and decided to get some quotes for next year to give me a rough idea, so adjusted lack of no claims etc and for my current car I've been quoted 3 grand with a ridiculous excess and I'm much older than you.
I even tried it with a banger at 700 quid and they want over a grand.
