Branded a criminal - twice
Discussion
Yesterday I went with my daughter and my grandson to his swimming class because my daughter had asked me to take a few photos of him swimming; he is two. Since she knows the people in her class I took photos of all so they'd have a nice souvenir. I am, after all, a professional photographer. Next thing I know is I am being interrogated as a potential paedophile. Seems one lady took exception and went to the management.
Today the heavy hand of the law decended again at Basinstoke; I was pulled over by the police, given no time even to draw breath before the statutory "anything you may say will be given in evidence" was uttered. Apparently the MOT on my 50 yr old E-type ran out two days ago. No chance to say sorry, I'll get it done, nothing, just a £60 ticket and a vary bad taste in the mouth as to the attitude of the police today.
For goodness sake, where on earth has tolerance and goodwill gone these days?

Photograph incident should have started with an apologetic question to you asking if you were there with any of the people in the pool. A quick polite response indicating daughter and grandson, aided by a little wave and a smile and all should be well with the world and you go back to snapping.
Not the best thing but certainly the World in which we live in these days with all these evil paediatricians [sic].
MOT issue - Yes you were bang to rights there and all your own fault. That said given it was 2 days out (and you were not being an ass which i feel is very unlikely) Copper should have taken your details and told you to report back to him at the station between x and y seven days later with your fresh MOT and he would leave the incident in his notebook. Failure to do so would result in book being thrown.

I'm always surprised at the uber-polite way the plod deal with the mouth-breathing types who have no insurance, tax or anything resembling a decent wardrobe on those TV shows, but hear so many tales of bad attitude to folks on here.Agree it's a sad state.
Anyway, that'll learn ya, you perp

It's annoying (re the MOT) - just get a diary or PDA.
The p-bomb thing is getting ridiculous these days. I wonder if "haven't you heard of w
k banks" is a good counter-measure? No? Damn it.

Nice car for a paedo. I always imagine them in old vans with 'free candy' written on the side.

OP, My grandad once got called a Pedo when he said hello to a lost little girl at a car boot sale, left him very emotionally hurt and feeling very let down by the human race, not a nice experience for you at all.

Why didn't you ask before taking ? On lookers wouldn't have any idea why you were there and may be concerned, thats a perfectly acceptable reaction in my opinion. If your intentions were kosher it would make sense to have had a word with management first so as not to rub anyone the wrong way.lowdrag said:

Why should the police have any tolerance? You've broken the law, they don't have to be nice to you. FFS its not like they dragged you into the road and kicked the crap out of you. They informed you of the legal position you were in regarding what you said and issued you a ticket. What do you expect when you get pulled over? An invite to the pub? Advice on where to go on holiday? For goodness sake, where on earth has tolerance and goodwill gone these days?

Not the way it works. All swimming pools have very clear 'No Photography' signs up. I cant say I agree with this but its the world we live in. IME You wont get a polite reminder, you'll get an aggressive approach possibly with police being called, and you are very likely to be escorted to the exit by some burly lifeguards. The only way you will be allowed to take pics is with permission of the staff at the pool. Even with this permission it can be a bit tricky.
Sounds like the woman who complained has this ' everyones a Pedo' attitude, probably a daily mail reader.
I hate these stupid rules as it means I have very few pics of my kids swimming in this country. Of course when we go on holiday I can take as many snaps as I like and guess what ? the world doesnt end!
This is also a money making scheme at certain pools. They will take 'official' pics for you with their camera and photographer which you can then buy for £££'s per photo.

No, its Britain thats been ruined, the pedo histeria doesn't appear anywhere else. The MOT, yes in the good old days there would be discretion, now the police hate the public, the public hate the police, points for tickets means prizes, it's where we're at, which is even sadder than paedo-hysteria.
The first issue is a shame, and any right-minded person would feel the same as you.
The MOT is a different matter. There is a law. You didn't comply with the law. You were unlucky, but you were caught out and you were penalised appropriately. If your income tax return were two days late you'd have got a fine for £100. Would that be any more unfair?
Them's the rules. Though I accept you're unlucky to have been pulled only 2 days in, I'm afraid you'll have to swallow your pride and that fine.

I too have fallen foul of the no photos at swimming baths rule. The police were called and they confiscated my scuba gear and the telephoto lens. How was I supposed to know that it wasn't a sea anemone.
Or a giant clam like the one Tarzan gets his foot stuck in and had to prise open with his knife. She was a big woman
