Right, sold the missus car eventually and i need to get a new everyday mode of transport that is fairly practical (4 doors and a reasonable size boot) as i am going to be a dad in November.
I did start a "what car thread" a couple of months back, the verdict then was an M5 (surpsrise surprise), but since then my budget has been cut drastically (as i have recently been made redundant) so i need something that is reasonably cheap to run, but still a little bit interesting and not too old (preferably less than 10 years old).
Have set a budget of £4k, have been looking at the Octavia VRS, but am struggling to think of anything else. There are 2 mark 2 examples for sale at the moment for £3995, but have 145k on the clock and this obvioulsy put me off somewhat.
Anyone got any other ideas? I won't be doing mega miles, probably about 6-7k a year.

Its the 2l so 143bhp, you could get a 320d within your budget but it will be higher miles.

It's quite amazing the amount of stuff you've got to lug around for a little un, so the Skoda Octavia is a good shout because the boot is huge.
Thinking along these lines what about a Mondeo Hatch (the ST220 or ST TDCI) should be available for that sort of money, http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3068624.htm.
Other things that spring to mind, A6 1.8T? you might find a TDi for that money but expect high mileage, here's an example http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2992898.htm if you want more performance.
There are numerous other Vag products to go for as well, Golf's, Passat's, Seat Toledo's or Leon's.
Any you after a petrol or a TDI in particular? Do you have a particular brand preference (or dislike?).

Thanks for the suggestions, sorry, should have said originally that i don't fancy a mondeo, i'll already had the ribbing off my mates, "that's it, your going to be a dad, so you might as well call it a day and get a mondeo" Want to prove them wrong lol.
I've looked at the BMW and Audi options, but just not sure on the reliability/running costs. After the Mother in Law had a A3 that had some sort of problem that cost loads to fix (can't rerember what it was) the wife's of the opinion that one will bunkrupt us.

I would also suggest a VW passat, though looking around I think for your budget they're going to have more than 100,000 miles on the clock.
A quick search on Autotrader and I found a 2005 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130. Got 45,000 on the clock backed up by a full service history and a few little extras etc... For sale at £4995. Personally a very nice car, lots of room, nice ride, fair bit of power, and good mpg, all at a good price:

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Saab 9-5 linked to earlier looks a little bit sad for that money?
I think the only advice I would give for this search is that you shouldn't stretch to get a s
tter. Better to get the best of something older rather than the worst of something newer.
Last time I was downsizing like this I bought a Saab 9000 Aero. Full power, full spec, wood and leather everwhere and it was chipped as well. Had Toyo Proxies fitted, paid up front for a years insurance and it was great.
Edit: esp. if you've been made redundunt, good to get the insurance man off your back for a year.
