What car - diesel estate

Looking to get a diesel estate budget around 12k.
So far looked at a BMW 520d which I liked though it's obc indicated only 34mpg which seemed really low. This is currently 1st choice.
Also looked at Audi a6 2.0tdi but have been told these engines have issues specially oil pumps so currently discounted.
Any other ideas need an estate and looking for good economy hence diesel engine.

Had a 2011 A6 2.0 TDI estate as a courtesy car a few weeks ago (previous generation model)...covered 3,000 miles in 6 days and have to say, its one of the most comfortable motorway bashers i've driven...only averaged 36-40mpg max though (was running in i suppose)..but 140k miles 4.2 XJ* does 30mpg driven the same way, so I wasn't impressed on that front..170 bhp seemed to lack a little grunt when joining the motorway and when loaded up with passengers and luggage.
If it had to be an estate, my money would go on a 530d (ive easily achieved 40 mpg with these), alternatively consider Lexus RX400h, E280/320 CDI...or if you want real VFM and exclusivity combined with cavernous 6/7 seat space AND 4wd....R320 CDI...not pretty, but hugely underated.

Hi Bear: Yup, the 2.0TDi is a shared engine in the VAG range.
I've run it in my Skoda Octavia since february 2007 for nigh on 100.000 miles now. Was dealer fitted with an engine/cabin warmer which I regularly use.
I have seen no problems what so ever on my engine. For the lifespan so far. And it has been used as the mileage will tell you.
My commute for the past 2 years have been 5 miles in city traffic - longer youneys have been primarily around Denmark with trips to the Nürburgring and Berlin, with a single visit to Le Mans, Cannes and Modena thrown in for good measure.
For the past 30.000 miles it's even gone with a remap - rolling roaded at 195 bhp and 343 newton meters of torque (have no clue what it is in lbs/ft)
I would clearly recommend you get a car with this engine. Just make sure it's been looked after by previous owner as the problems (and I know of the history for this kind af engine) only seems to exist on cars which have taken a beeting on cold engines. Which is why I use the engine warmer and never give it the beans until its run for at lest 8 miles.

My Audi 1.9tdi Avant (51 plate) is on 273,000 miles, has never had any engine related issues, returns 50+mpg, and hasnt been dealer serviced for 150,000 miles. It gets an annual 'supercentre' oil change service. Its smooth as silk compared to other diesel engineed cars I regularly drive as well. Just flew through its MOT with no issues as well. In fact, in the last 5 MOTs, it has only needed a new number plate, a suspension arm (£100), and a few bulbs.

NOt sure how you were driving the Audi but mine is better than that, At motorway speeds circa 80mph+ it averages 44mpg, (we averaged 44mpg from calais to spain 4 up and fully loaded). A roads at 50-60mph it will average approx 51/52mpg. Not bad for a big estate in my eyes anyway. Around town approx 36mpg. Our car has 55k on the clock now, only prob so far was a throttle position sensor failed.

I had the same dilemma last year , the 520d thought was underpowered for such a big car , sane with the a6 . I looked at 330d touring ( too small ) and Audi a4avants , thought that 12k would get me into a poverty spec Audi and I didn't want that . In the end 12k bought me a 2 year old 60k passat 170 se-l , leather etc . The car I wanted was the new Honda accord 2.2 cdti , however the cheapest one was 15k last year I bought my car from car giant
