Prepare for a letter from DVLA demanding back tax and a penalty for not SORNing.

You should be able to tax any time from now onwards for it to start on 1st August.

P.S. - when did DVLA become responsible for wife tax ?

Going by the thread title and not the actual post...go to a crown post office with valid MOT, proof of insurance and your slip of the V5C(/2) to purchase your tax disk. You can go tomorrow.
