Why I always leave 100 yards when stopped on the mway

Sobering stuff. It always saddens me to see people steam up to the back of a queue of traffic, as though they'd stopped at traffic lights. Always, always leave a buffer in front of you, until you can see in your mirror that the traffic behind has caught up and slowed down.

t me. I watched a program where this happened and the first car hit did the same as the one in the vid (disappeared) needless to say the young woman driver sadly died on impact.
On arrival the emergency services had no idea that the first car ever existed. It was only until the car infront (who pretty much survived without a scratch) asked where the other car was. It was flat as a pancake and wedged under the lorry.

Good point well made. Always good try to take account of what is behind when stopping for M'way traffic.
Outside of those test conditions its quite unlikely to hit so square on, and drive the cars into something so completely solid, even another lorry will give a bit (not a lot if its sat there with brakes on of course), and if there were more than two cars again this would lessen the impact on each car. The test is set up to give 100% perfect worst case scenario. Having said that I wouldn't fancy my chances in any scenario that involved a lorry at that speed, and a stationary car.

Quite shocking, but probably not realistic. You're unlikely to be stopped in front of a concrete wall...Sobering stuff. Probably hard to be sure from the video, so I don't want to slaughter the guy based on internet evidence, but it looks to me like he was quite late on the brakes. I could hazzard lights with no noticeable slowing down. Most likely this is a repost but this is very nasty similar to the above, I bet the car that pulled out of lane and carried on was the luckiest person alive, car behind not so lucky, instant death, bet it resembled a piece of crushed scrap metal.

Few years ago I was going down the motorway in the work van, all 3 lanes stopped ahead, me and anther lad said lets wait in lane 3 so we stopped there, there was a car in lane 2 waiting along side us, a silver Bora which seconds later was hit from behind by a lorry going flat on the limiter, it crushed the Bora into the lorry in front which killed the Bora occupants instantly, it even wrote the car off that was parked in front of the lorry the Bora went under.
I will never forget seeing that and trying to get help, I now always leave a large gap when parking and always lane one, if a lorry hits me then I should be able to run off into the hard shoulder, the car will be fudged but I should live.

i remember that too. wasnt the truck driver potching with a laptop or something and the passenger in the truck bent over looking for something in the footwell?? tho i may have got 2 stories crossed up there!?t me. I'm sure it was a traffic cops episode the bloke was playing with a new phone he got, taco showed very little braking before he hit the 206.but yeah, still shocking the devestation in the accident.
