Standard wheels on the car have 205/55 r15 tyres (standard tyres as well). Will 185/55 r15 fit ok? Thanks

Depends on the rim width. Without that you can't answer the question.

If they do fit safely, they will drop your gearing and thus your speedo by just under 4% which is do-able, but not ideal.

Don't think so, because the 55 is a proportion of the width of the tyre, so a 55 tyre with a 185 width will be much lower profile than a 215 55 tyre.

The best thing to do is nearly always to fit the correct tyres for your rim, and not try to scrimp by fitting narrower or "Improve performance" by fitting wider. It doesn't generally work.

How does changing the width of your tyre alter your gearing and speedo?

Because the profile is calculated from the width

They'll fit yes, not sure why you'd want to do it though

No, unless its an old VW Golf then it is standard practice regardless of whether it will actually fit biggrin

I'm going to fit winter tyres to them (they're a spare set originally on the car). The tyres I want (Nokian WRG2 or Vredestein Snowtrac 3) are significantly cheaper at 185 width than 205.

You'll have to check the width of the rims they'll be going on. You might end up with some major stretch!!

They'll fit yes, the euro boys stick 165's on 8J rims!! It looks st but they'll fit. I wouldn't want to "press on" if the wheels are any wider than a 7J though.

Most tyre suppliers recommend a difference of no greater than 2.5% in diameter - changing from 205/55 to 185/55 is 3.6%.

If you look on the manufacturers website, there'll be a spec sheet for each given tyre model which gives the manufacturers recomended widths.

You'll also need to check that the load rating of the narrower tyres is adequate for the car - if they are below that of the OEM fitment you may find your insurance invalid.
