my brother has just told me he has been running his V plate E-class 3.0TD on the red stuff for over a year. he says it only costs him 70p a litre from his farmer buddy. he knows if he gets caught he will lose his car, and get a fine. but says what he has saved so far more than covers it, and the risks of a middle aged father of 2 being stopped and dipped is non existent.I'm bye no means condoning his behaviour, but you can buy cheap diesel barges for about 1k on eBay. take your pick of mercs,BMW,Audi, shoguns. and at 70p a liter. well you do the Mathe. has any one heard of a friend !!!! doing this

I hear they just take your car and be done with it if this is the case a £1000 derv averaging 35mpg would pay for itself in about 11k miles (6 months for me) if just crushing your car is true it seems like a no brainer if your happy to drive around in a £1000 car

You've got all your details on your profile and have just shopped your brother on a website that is known to be watched by the authorities.

Smooth move...

Except they won't just take the car, they'll track back how long you have had it for, do the mileage maths, and every mile you can't account for, they'll have the duty for that.

Seems they take duty quite seriously...

Well seeing as it raises about £25billion a year (then another £3billion odd for the VAT on top of that) i assume its a pretty big deal to them.

My £1500 derv does 70mpg and I get 45p a mile. It's slow enough to be considered agricultural so I think I should be allowed to use red.
Not that I do.

They'll impose a fine on top of taking the car.

A chap who rents space in our yard was running three small trucks on red. He was fined £120,000. Second offense.

Old Mercedes are prime candidates for roadside checks from what I saw with my own eyes at Telford Services on the M54 a month ago. Peugeots and VW's too.

I'm sure I've read of people putting a second tank in the spare wheel well and keeping a small amount of diesel in the old tank but not having it connected up.

If we're talking about cars, it's underbonnet where the checks will be made as lots of modern cars have anti syphon devices.

Whenever I have seen the fuel checkpoints they always have the bonnet up checking under there in addition to the in tank tester. Round my way they only seem to stop vans though, private or small firm ones that is, local council ones are waved by.

I think you would need a dual tank and separate hidden fuel line to the engine if you really wanted go undetected and even so, who knows how well the examiners are trained to go looking for such things.

Surely there are far more lucrative criminal enterprises with less severe punishments to undertake if someone is that hard up for money.

HMRC take it pretty seriously, it's tax evasion, so if he's been doing it for a long time he could face a hefty back payment or even jail. Red diesel is treated the same as any other tax evasion, so is fairly serious.

Well done on grassing him up!

If you're naive enough to think that not having your real details in your profile will stop the powers that be from tracking you down, you should just step away from the keyboard right now.

On reflection I don't think its a great idea running about on red stuff. Just a bit jealous of his half price motoring for over a year now.

He should pay his whack like the rest of us, everyone thinks its ok as they get cheap motoring but a lot of the reason everyone else pays so much is that people are defrauding the revenue, your brother and the farmer who is abusing a subsidy given to farmers so they can make a living. This is the same as those who do everything for cash, again the rest of us are paying extra to shore up the country's finances whilst those in the cash economy carry on as normal.

If you cant afford diesel, drive less or get a more economical car. I end up cycling to work for several reasons but one is to make my fuel last longer.

I don't think they take the car, it's normally a £500 fine and they tax the remainder of diesel you have in the tank.

You hear the stories about men carrying around the £500 in their car for when the moment comes.

There's alot of it being done in Northern Ireland. HMRC can't catch them all, but they do try.
