ok this will be a short and probs poorly spelt and grammatically incorrect (just got back from nights, want sleep)

I just topped up at my local shell and the price on vpower labled at 137.1p but it was charging me at 141.1p. I pointed this out at the till expecting them to go out, correct the price on the pump and charge me atth elower rate. I thought it really was that simple, they made a mistake they lose a few quid and job done.

However they decided that they would refuse to let me pay the advertised price as it was a "mistake" I did point out it wasnt my mistake and I wasnt will to pay for it so they then decided to call me cheap, petty and annoying. I offered to pay them what it should be but they refused, I was tempted to walk out (as I had offered to pay) but I'm pretty bloody tired after a night shift to I asked for the managers name and the customer services number.

the CS are closed right now and not open untill monday so I emailed them. I expect a call on monday morning or I'll be calling them.

I would have been fine with a simple "oops sorry there you go" but the fact they made a massive deal and then decided to insult me has REALLY p****d me off. I did just me like 2 quid back but now I feel I should have more. I don't know what I want but I'm pi**ed off a simple thing turned them into a**eholes and insult me.

Grr

rant over.

Night night...... or morning morning to all non shift workers

Did you make the epic mistake of not even taking a picture or anything as proof that your not just trying to pull a fast one?

Was it priced on the boards at the lower price and charging the higher price at the pump or when you went to pay?
If it was when you went to pay I'd expect customer services maybe to give you a voucher for the hassle however if at the pump it gave you the higher price then they will just fob you off, saying that it shows you the price when you pick the pump nozzle up.

It's not really the end of the world is it? Frustrating yes, but it's not going to make your engine go bang or anything.

Happens all the time. Should just be a little more tolerant as it is only one persons simple mistake and they were not trying to fool you.

There are certain rules about inviting offers based on an advertised price but I wouldn't invoke my consumer rights over a pound or two in this sort of scenario.

What did pi55 me off at my local shell garage was when I bought a jet-wash but some pleb decided she was going to wash two cars twice (i.e. she'd bought 4 jet-wash tickets) - I was in serious danger of turning up late for work so I went to the hand-car wash next door (paid a bit more) and got them to do it. While they were washing my car for me I went back to the Shell checkout and asked the man behind the counter for my money back...

Guess what...!

He started trying to play hard-ball. I quickly lost my temper with him. He was making excuses about his manger not being in. I told him that wasn't my problem and I wanted my refund. What he should have done was given me the refund and sorted it out with the manager himself when the manger returned. There was nothing dodgy about the deal so he should have just done it. Instead I had to wait 15 minutes for the manager to get back. The pleb was still fumbling around outside with a jet-wash hose wrapped around an old stter that wasn't getting any cleaner.

Lol, so what does the law say? ie how many times in a row is one allowed to use a jet wash?

Liam, I'm guessing as it was their mistake you could well have been within your rights to walk away if they refused to take your money for the price it was advertised at.

You would howver, as a previous reply mentions, require evidence to back up the price being advertised. ie. picture evidence or a writen statement of the occurance signed by the staff on the till.

Even if it was just £2 difference in price the principal of the matter would mean I'd probably not let it go either.
The fuel companies tend to screw us for every penny they can get through hiking up prices on predictions of future increases on oil markets, and then not lowering them on predictions of future decreases on oil markets etc. So I'd be out to make sure I didn't pay anything over the odds, even on something as trivial as £2.

Couple of points:

1. Are you sure the price on the board was for V-Power? Noramlly the board only shows prices for bog-standard petrol and diesel.

2. If you saw the price on the pump was 141.1, why did you go ahead and fill up? Why didn't you stop?

Had a similar thing years ago (Shell Banstead)

Filled up, thought "jeesus it's a bit pricey" as I returned to the car, they were changing the numbers on the pump to something IIR about 10p cheaper. Complained the staff pleaded ignorance. I phoned Shell UK. They said "go back to the station with your reciept and they will refund it to your card"

Was going to, then a mate had his new card cloned. 95% sure at that station. So decided against it. biggrin

Even 141p is really cheap for vpower these days isnt it? I think I paid 148 recently in Epsom.

Was it the price in the pump or the board outside?, it could be the ASA if it was the board.

My local Shell filling station (Headington - I live 6.2 miles away in Kennington) are a really nice friendly bunch of blokes. Always pass time of day, esp when you go regularly, as I do. Even when it is mega-busy there, with idiots seeming to do their weekly shopping, they are cheerful. Prices are reasonable too, match all the local supermarkets, and the Saab (as did the Rover) always runs nice on Shell. Every time I go away with the caravan, I fill the tank with V-power to give the motor a chance to pull the caravan along at very good progress.
V-power there comes out at, usually, around 145.9-146.9. No problem with that. Also - the prices on the sign always exactly match the prices at the pumps. These guys are on the button.
No complaints from me re Shell garages generally; also, when we are away, I always use the stuff and the other Shell stations I have found to be similarly well-run. Maybe I'm lucky.

Wow, £2..

"Its the principle!" - Someone made a little mistake, we all do it. You weren't going to drive to the other Shell garage that sells V-Power were you, you've already said you were tired after your nightshift..

Petty.

If I was insulted by the staff I think I would be more willing to take it further, wouldn't you?

I might have said.. "The pump out there says it's 130 whatever it was" but just so they know.. I wouldn't have tried to get them to sell it to me at that price.

When was the last time you looked at the price of fuel? I can't remember when I last did.. Go in there, fill up, pay, leave.. No point in worrying about how many pence more it is than the BP 3 miles away, life is far too short for that.

It might seem petty but saying lifes too short to worry about it is dangerous. With that attitude who knows where it could lead? Today its 3p, tomorrow its 4p, the day after its 5p until eventually somebody with no car at all walks past a Shell and gets charged a billion pounds!

We must act!

I'm not too bothered about the amount of money but I'm p*ssed off they decided to insult me and I don't see why I should pay for thier mistake, yeah mistakes happen but it wasn'y my mistake so why should I pay?

If they had been polite about it and said they're not able to do it at the station etc and gave me the customer service number and sent me on my way I wouldnt have been bothered but I'm not going to be insulted for pointing out a mistake they made.

Seriously fellas get fked. I don't know anyone who couldn't just fumble around in their glove box or some cubbyhole (jean pocket) and find the £2. But i bloody wouldn't have!! Considering petrol is the most ludicrously priced comodity in the UK, when they're selling it for 16p a litre where i am right now! I would GENUINELY argue over 20p on my fuel bill, this is because everyone involved in the oil and gas industry makes a frigging fortune and i refuse point blank to let them have a single penny more than i legally have to.

Obviously i wouldn't moan about £2 pounds on other purchases but when it comes to fuel i think the OP did the right thing. Get that £2 back in your pocket and buy yourself a pint! beer
