Never really been into BMWs that much, and assumed the M3 was quick, but never really paid much attention to them.
Washing the TVR this morning, the bloke who lives opposite had his 2003 M3 which he parks somewhere else turned up and we started chatting, then he asks if I wanted to go for a quick spin. Felt nice and solid, then we got out of the village.

God, those things are fast! My God! And the road-holding was just incredible, together with the massive acceleration. I said to him, I had no idea they were this quick, I was gobsmacked looking at the speedo. No wonder he takes it to the 'Ring.

E46 is a great car, I prefer coupes though (no offence)
E92 is in a different league, irrespective of what the figures say

As an all-rounder, I do genuinely believe an M3 is a difficult car to beat.
It has 4 proper seats and a decent boot (like any other 3 series, obviously), but you can take it to a track keep pace with much more dedicated 'sports cars'.
It's quite funny being sat in a fully adjustable electric seat, looking at a dash that's got Sat-nav, TV etc. while sitting on the tail of something like a Lotus Elise round a track.
An e46 M3 at current prices represents a LOT of car for the money.

I've had an E46 Coupe and a Convertible in the past both great but in very different ways. The Coupe is one of the best cars I have ever driven, the engine is just brilliant and they are very quick but very easy to drive sensibly, I used to get 30 mpg on a motorway run in the Coupe. They are an absolute bargain at the moment in my opinion.
Hard car to beat for fun if you need four proper seats, although I don't like the styling of the E9x 3-series. I have never been a fan of the M3, with the exception of the original flared arch one, & I really dislike the sound of the exhaust, a metallic sound like ball bearings in a can. I was running a 300 bhp MR2 Turbo at the time my boss turned up in his wifes, as his 911 was in for a service. We swapped keys & it just felt flat to me, ok but no great shakes. On the other hand he came back very impressed, there was no doubt that mine was quicker, but he also preferred the drive of mine too.

But to be fair, you're comparing two totally different cars, a tuned & modified 2 seater (with all the maintenance issues that entails) and a mass-produced standard 4 seat car.I am talking specifically about the E46, no experience of the others.
M's are great car's aren't they, my nipper has an M5 and dare I say it it's an even better all round car than the M3 if you want car that can do everything and carry 4 in total comfort.
On a similar theme; I've taken a few passengers out in my Cerb who own M's and the odd pork, to a man they can't believe how violent it is, it's obviously a passenger seat thing
