Taking a car away from a dealer
Discussion
Where we live secondhand car prices are silly
So thinking about going down to Glasgow and going car shopping.
I'm aware that you can't drive a car away from a dealer unless you have insurance.
But what if I take it away from a dealer on a trailer?
As i intend to take the trailer down so i don't have to go back to Glasgow a second time

Are you not at an age where you can drive any car with the owners permission or do you not have anyone you can take with you who would be suitable covered?
Otherwise yes I don't see why they wouldn't let you do that, if you've paid for the car I don't think they'd be too bothered if you s
t in the glovebox and rolled it into the canal tbh.

Almost every policy like this requires the car to be insured with the owners permission too, or your insurance doesn't cover it.Otherwise yes I don't see why they wouldn't let you do that, if you've paid for the car I don't think they'd be too bothered if you s

Woops.
I always say if your going to break the law its best to not know your doing it then your not worried about it and looking guilty!
In that case, why can you not purchase the car then call your insurance company at the garage? Insurance changeover can be instant iirc.

I bought a car from a Manchester dealer as they gave the best price to drive down to the IoW and they arranged 7 day insurance for me for free which they also used to tax it:

You dont need to provide insurance proof. Im sat here, at work in my car dealership now, so take it from someone in the trade.
As long as you are happy to take the vehicle, its your responsibility not ours. Try a 7 day insurance though if your buying from a main franchaise dealer, you could drive back then, and have it insured!

When i bought the XJ yesterday, i called my insurance to tell them (luckily they answered straight away, as sometimes i can be waiting up to 30 minutes to talk to someone) and transfered the policy straight on to the Jag, with my son also covered so he cought drive it home. (i drove up in a company van).
I've done this on 2 occasions, I phone my insurance company from the garage (cause I didn't know what car I was getting in advance) gave them all the details, they said I was covered, gave the phone to the dealer, everyone happy. I'd ask the dealer what they accept and whether it's got MOT etc, providing your not getting finance and tell them you want to take it away on they day.

The dealer will no doubt want to Pdi the car or even MOT it before it goes out. This is not going to happen on the day you go down. A return journey is inevitable.
The last car I bought from a dealer, the tax had run out. The V5 was still in the previous owners name so the dealer could not tax it so I had to give them a copy of my insurnace policy so they could tax it. So yes a return visit was needed. As for taking the car away on a triler, I can't see a problem.
V5 should still be in the previous owners name, thats why you use the Yellow section of the V5 when you bring it into the trade, to take responsibility off the previous owner.
If its used, I doubt it will need PDI'ing etc. But MOT may need to be done, depends on the dealership. I would call up and ask the questions on the phone first to be fair. How much MOT, is it taxed, if I get the right deal can I take the vehicle today. Also depends if your a cash buyer, finance,or card.
Card payments take 2-3 days to balance, if the company hasnt got a high cash flow, they possibly will need to take the vehicle off funding if selling to you, but wont have cleared funds to pay for, so may want 2-3 days.
If its cash, and less than 10k, I cant see a problem aslong as its MOT'd!

Call the dealer and ask them if the car is prepped. Then you will know if you'll be able to drive it away or have to wait. Pretty much all dealers will be able to provide 7 day free insurance but you'll need their reference number in order for it to be emailed over, which they'll give you if you buy.
If the cars not taxed then it'll be a wait from the phonecall for the 7 day free to be emailed through then for someone to go to the post office. The dealer is liable if the car isn't taxed or insured as it leaves the premesis.
