I've been looking at a new Polo GTI over the weekend as I'm looking for something that is cheaper to run and possibly a bit more fun than my Freelander to use as my everyday car.The GTI seems to be the best I've seen so far except for doubts about the fuel consumption.

The offical figures which I understand are a bit of a fantasy suggest about 47 mpg combined which I could live with but I'd be grateful for any real world info anyone has.

I will be doing about 20,000 miles a year on mainly a and b roads and I usually get close to the combined figures.

I have also looked at the ds3 110 d sport which seems good for 60mpg and is about 4-5k cheaper but I have my doubts about its ability to do the miles over 3 years with no issues.

Any thoughts or alternative suggestions gratefully received.Thanks.

Hi mate i have one and its a great wee car, yeah you could go with the skoda and save money but you have the age old badge image problem for some ( doesnt bother me) and out of the family that use this twin charged engine and chassis , the ibiza/fabia and polo the polo is by far the best place to sit in.

We looked at all three cars and choose the polo as it just feels better screwed together, yes 47 mpg is easily possible on motorways, infact my average coming back to scotland from liverpool when we collected it was 48.3 mpg. But my main complaint is that dsg box, its really easy to confuse it on fast a roads when you want to overtake in a higher gear and use the powerband to pull you, instead the box kicks down a gear then after a few seconds kicks back up to the gear you had selected, got so fed up with it now that its left in drive and we are looking to get rid of it at the end of the year............shame too as its a stonking wee engine thats easily capable of showing a standard impreza uk wrx a thing or two

The fabia looks very cool in some of the two tone colour options and the ibiza looks cool in white with the panoramic black roof, just shame none of them come with a manual box

I've had one of these for about a month, never got 47mpg, seems to average about 37mpg.

The DSG can be irritating when it kicks down unnecessarily, but the majority of the time it is quite good. They sound pretty good for a 1.4 too.

I've got one. Too fast for the chassis. That said, I get over 40mpg without trying.

If it was my money I'd get a DS3 DSport Plus 150 THP. Every option included, plenty of speed and Citroen have some great PCP plans atm.

I got for my friend this week..

DS3 DSport Plus 150 THP in Obsidian Black
£18135 otr
£1637 discount off list
£1500 Citroen finance contribution
£1000 customer deposit
£254pm over 35 months.
£7188 final payment

Either that or get an late Edition 30. Run rings round this Polo.

Yes I imagine on motorways etc it's a lot better. Only problem is my commute is predominantly B roads, which is good fun, but not the best for economy.

It'll go up to 7th at around 45 or select it yourself at 40ish. It does very good mpg at that speed.

It quite a learning curve to work out the 'boxs foibles. Give me a manual anyday - unless I'm crawling in central London!

If I hypermile I can get over 50mpg on my 10 mile B-road commute to work.

best ive seen from my mine is 40mpg that was worked out brim to brim it does need a good run to reach good mpg

things to consider the oil consumption maybe a bit high upto 1 litre per 600miles is considered normal theirs cases of new piston rings an even replacement engines

theirs a few issues with dsg rattles which are considered normal theirs a few cases of them crashing but i think none have be replaced or have managed to workout why

personal issues ive encountered rattles buzzing an drippy rear washer i find the handling a bit odd that said it does have some nice quality's

ive read good things about the ds3s & the hdis im considering swapping my polo for a ds3

Yep, I'm on 9k now and have put in 3 litres of longlife oil at £20 a litre - lucky not my money!
Yep, interior rattles
Yep, DSG rattles (although I like the dry clutch noise - like a Ducati!)

Oh, and the handling? Scares the life out of me sometimes. I've learnt to slow down. Not confidence inspiring in the slightest.

me too, all three yes. Dash rattle from new at 30mph drove me up the wall but it was fixed, every now and again the drivers window drops when trying to put it up ( I reckon its the anti-pinch function triggering) volks say no, yeah dsg rattles and does make some odd noises especially when turning into slow junctions off throttle.

Went into audi last weekend to look at a deal on the new black edition a4 saloon, the fking jokers offered us 13,500 for our 5000 mile 11 plate polo gti due to there being no book price out yet.....away and take a fook to yourself

Man, thats getting into Alfa TS territory. It's no wonder my chrome exhaust tips are black. My colleagues A4 TDI has shinier tips!

I'd like to think the OP has been warned off the Polo with us 3 banging on about them biggrin

In hindsight as a company car driver I would have had a Mini Cooper S on 16's. That or the DS3 DSport. I was very impressed when I had a go last week.

Shame I'm stuck with mine for another 2.5 years!

I've got 2 years and 11 months to go. Wish I had just gone for the Golf GTI now.

wbac initially offered 13 flat but i got an e mail from them on friday saying that its went up in value to 14 and a bit, thats better than the tits at audi. We have 2.5 years left aswell but hopefuly at the end of the year it shouldnt cost too much to get out of it into a bigger car, as it stands with wbac offer two grand to get out.

Its still a fun wee car, just should have put a bit more thought into the future as getting all the associated baby stuff in would be a no go

Mine was using 1 litre every 600 miles. After a lot of wrangling with VW, who wanted to start stripping the engine, the engine was replaced. Other than that I quite like mine.
