I am not sure how long his father put him to drive, but if he was coming from Hattisburg and got pulled over here, is is considerably less; no less irresponsible though.I live in Mandeville near 12 and from here to Hattiesburg is about 100 miles if you go 12-59. Holden is about 30-40 the opposite way, so if daddy passed out at home then he drove about 130 or so miles. Thats a good amount of practice, and I seriously doubt that was his first time driving. I know things were different a long time ago, but I grew up in a rural area and drove by myself a few times starting about 10 years old in a Ford pickup with a 460 engine in it, BUT it was only on backroads, not the interstate or highway.

Yes Socorob, it was different here in Oz too, 40/50 years ago, in the country.
We had an orchard, but dad had to work too, to make a living.
I had a "dawn to dusk", driving permit for 2 years before I was old enough to get a licence. Theoretically I was allowed to drive our Dodge ute, in daylight only, to the cool store at the railway yards with a load of fruit to ship to market, as it was only open when dad was at work.
I played basketball at the Police Citizen Youth Club in town 5 miles away, a couple of nights a week. Dad allowed me to take the ute on cold & wet nights. On some of those nights I would drive the police sargent, who ran the place, home the half mile he usually walked.
Most of us may not have had much money back then, but it was a better world to live in.

That was so many years ago I'm sure the statute of limitations has got me covered. It was a different world back then. A few days ago I saw a truck driving down the interstate with 2 guys sitting in the back on the toolbox( which is illegal now) and thinking, that's dangerous. Then I thought back to high school and back then a few people had pickups and would give 5-10 people rides home from school in the back almost daily, and no one even thought twice about it. After I got out of high school is when they made the seatbelt law here. The first time I ever wore a seatbelt was in my mid 20s. Now I feel like I'm doomed if I don't have one on.
