Supermarket Motor Oil.

In our local supermarket today and I was looking at their own brand semi-synthetic 5w30 oil.
According to the labels it appears to "meet or exceed" all manner of specifications including Ford's own spec (I drive a Mondeo ST).
Obviously someone else manufactured it for them and I'm wondering would anyone brave enough to actually try this oil over the premium brands costing almost twice as much?

I used to use Supermarket own in my Saxo and my Rover 25. Never seemed like it did any damage, just with my Ignis I like to be that extra bit more careful, and it doesnt take a lot of oil so its no biggie to spend that little bit extra. I'm guessing that the additives ect would be better on branded though.

Its obviously manufactured by someone else, could well be the same as Halfords etc.
If it meets the specs and it isn't a sensitive engine I'm happy to chuck it in. I change very regularly because I like tinkering around with the car on a Sunday morning anyway. If I used decent Mobil/Castrol I would have to cut the intervals down because the cost would get a bit silly

I must confess I haven't purchased oil at retail price for several years but that seems ridiculously high to me ?I'll sell you however much VAG spec 10w/40 semi you want for £5 a litre

king rip off. I used to pay less than that for Fully Synthetic Race Spec oil, Delivered from a well Known online retailer. The standards that the oil meets are determined by testing it, so as long as it mentions the specification required by the engine manufacturer then it is good enough.
Using the right oil is more important than the 'best' oil. One of my cars needs ACEA A5/B5, the other needs E3 (or CCMC D5). Even if one of these oils was 'better' than the other, using it in both engines would knacker one of them.

One of my cars needs a specific grade for its TDI PD engine, Halfords sell their own brand stuff, to the relevant VAG spec. That'll do me thanks.Eggman said:
