And learnt that a 2007 Aud RS4 can be had for 17-18k nowadays. That is just stunning value for a 420hp, V8, sub 5 sec 0-60, under 5 year old car that can be had in an estate guise!

I seem to remember they had a bad suspension and engine rep, has that been largely ironed out by now or is the case of Mazda RX8, where you could end up with a faultless car or one that will need an engine rebuild within the firs tyear?

For a 2007 Rs4 avant prices are around £25k to £35k,

Higher mileage less desirable spec getting close to low £20k-£25k

Really low mileage still sell for high £30k's.

You wont be finding one for £17-£18k for a long time.
