Funny shapes on road signs

One of those questions that ive always been meaning to ask on here as it does seem hardly any ofnthe drivers I know understand what they mean. Some of the road signs giving directions and routes, etc, have a little triangle, or square, or circle on them next to the route name, any ideas what these mean?
