Anyone out there got a Car Lift at home?????

Hello all.... I am new here... (so be gentle with me ;-) )

I am wondering if anyone might be able to help with my question below....

I am probably not what you would describe as a proper Piston Head.. but I drive a new Audi TT and drool over the bonnets of any passing R8's when I see them...!!! Oh I and follow F1!!!!!

My question is only remotely car related...


We are coming to the end of our new build house. Our basement has a garage - and we had to fit a hydraulic car lift to allow access with cars/motorbikes etc as the Council prohibited us from having a ramp that you would drive down to the garage...

We are entitled to reclaim the vat on all materials from Customs & Excise... and have done so for most of them so far - except they are disallowing our car lift vat receipt which is about £2800 worth of vat money. I am loathe to wave goodbye to - not at least without a fight!

If I can find just one person who was successful in claiming back the vat on their car lift that they fitted to a NEW BUILD then I have a fair case... However.. not everyone has a flippin car lift!!!!

So I am looking for a needle in a haystack!

I think you'll be struggling to be honest. You can claim back the VAT on lifts/hoist - see the guidance on page 13 of this link:

I'm pretty sure it won't mean car lifts though!

When I did my claim, I remember that I couldn't claim even for the electrical part of my remote garage door. Mind you, I still sent the invoice in, and it fortunately slipped through the net. Have you rang them up to ask?

You are RIGHT.. the vat documentation DOES say lifts and hoists.. and I dont think it is wrong of me to assume that covers car lifts too! Our car lift is not for storing.. it is the ONLY way to access the underground garage in your car... and was also an explicit part of our planning permission... however they wont be swayed....

I just need to find one person in the UK who has succeeded in reclaiming the vat!!! Or a business that can reclaim it (the self build scheme was created to allow DIY builders to reclaim vat as if they were a small business I believe).

I spoke to one lift supplier - one chap was super helpful and said one client of theirs in Milton Keynes had successfully reclaimed the vat.. Then his boss called me and refused to co-operate or pass my details on to their customer. He was sooo rude and then hung up on me....

So.. I am still searching!!!

AND I WANT MY £2800 BACK!!!! booooooo
