Cars are now a crap way of getting around except for multiple passengers?

I got sick of being stuck in traffic jams last year so did my bike test and have used that for my 40 mile round trip commute since. I still have 3 cars and love my cars but i'm increasingly feeling they are pointless as commuting tools. I'm beginning to think the ideal is a real track focused, weekend blast machine and then something van / 4x4 truck would be the idea mix. Along side the commuting bike. A car nice car to go to work in seems pointless, it's massively slower on any busy road, parking is a pain, people get jealous and damage nice cars, nice cars generally drink loads, cost loads to insure and tax. So will we see a move soon to the car being only a toy or load lugger? Or even for city dwellers only a toy as taxis or hire vechicles can cover other needs?

If it's just you needing to get from a to b is a car no longer the best option. Myself living in the Thames valley I have concluded it isn't and the rate I have seen people signing up to do bike tests in the last two years I believe my train of though isn't unique.

Each to their own I suppose. I have two brothers who both commute on bikes. I prefer for my internal organs to be in the same location in the event of impact.
Granted, the South East is a ballache for commuting though, so that would probably change my tune.

I suspect you are right. Added to this, I can't help feeling the motorist is getting persecuted a lot by Car-hating Nazi Councils. I, too, have considered sex with a fat girl, it's getting desperate. Oops, I mean buying a moped.

My daily commute is 20 miles of the lake district's B roads. There isn't much traffic but there is a lot of rain and, in winter, snow which would make using a bike a chore. There is no public transport out here so a car is still definitely the best option.

Cars are fantastic, but they completely suck as city commuter vehicles. I actually resent the times when I have to use a car during rush hour, instead of my scooter or my bicyle. I'd quite like to add some sort of Caterham toy in addition to my wife's 3 series, but I would never use it.

It's not the South East, specifically. I think if you plotted a map of rude arrogant self-importance, you'd find that it's down to major centres of population. The higher the population density, the more self-important and impatient people get. London is so big, that its influence extends well beyond its boundaries.

In my experience, drivers in rural Hampshire are more courteous than those in central Glasgow.

I drive around on my own most days, and I never get stuck in traffic jams. Longest I've sat in a jam is 10 minutes, and that was rush hour in Belfast in a diversion.

I'd rather sit in traffic in a comfortable car than fly through on a bike. For me the risk isn't worth it.

As a Londoner, I think you have a point.

My main (E Class estate) car is more for talking the family and kids around than anything else.

I commute by bike (cycle) or public transport.

Kids go to school on foot/scooter/bike.

Wife cycles around a lot.

The wife has a Clio - personally I think she should sell it so we could use one of the city car club schemes on the odd occasion that we were to need two cars.

Can you suggest a better method for me to commute 160 miles from one place devoid of public transport to another place devoid of public transport?

For people who don't live in cities they are the only practical way of getting around!
