The car industry has become emission - mpg - efficiency crazy in my opinion.

Every mainstream car manufacturer has an Ultra *blue* efficient range within their models.

We have a few pool cars in work which are supposed super efficient and I just dont think they are all that and the claimed MPG`s are no where near the real world figures.

This got my thinking of my old 530d manual which was almost just as economical as some of the newer cars what oldish cars give decent mpg figures

Pug 405 1.9D
530d - mine did 60mpg @ 60mph from newport to london

I've driven a few BowelMotion VWs and under acceleration their fuel economy is atrocious. Only if you're doing a constant high cruising speed will they turn in their mpg wonder-figures. In stop-start traffic you might as well be driving a V8.

Are you sure? - i assume you meant the horrible old A-series. Was lucky to get into the 40s in mine, and the exhaust always smelt of unburnt fuel! Though the newer 5spd 1.1 (K-series) might have managed 50s.

I had a diesel 106 too, but the older 1.4. Was brilliant on fuel 60-70mpg. Bought it for £300 too.

Old 1.8TD Mondeo - gruff old engine, but simple and returned 55-60 quite easily.

I got 45mpg on the trip down to the Rolls Royce Sunday Service in my (Non-overdrive!) Triumph Spitfire- not bad for a sports car, eh?

Are you sure that happened? The ones I drove only dipped below 50mpg after a few days of being moved around a car park/garages. confused

Always thought that since mpg is such a marketing tool these days that they should be independently verified before they are allowed to quote them. Bloody liars, the lot of 'em.

I was going to say a Wartbury then I checked and saw that the best MPG was about 35 yikes

for a car with stop/start in the 1980's that's not good...

Somebody in my office had one of those and discovered the only way to realistically get near its claimed 74mpg you have to sit at 40mph on the motorway with horses overtaking you. That said its mpg for the rest of the time was hardly shocking, just seeing as its sold purely on its mpg it was quite expensive for what it was.

Well, my 10 year old Avensis which is my daily driver is averaging a verified 45-47 mpg for my whole working week (58 miles per day, mostly DC).

Which I think is exceptional for a 2.0 PETROL!!

biggrin

Unless there's something wrong with it of course

Rover 214 (box shape) (1995 vintage) on a run, mid to high 40s were doable.

Same for the 2003 MG ZR. Driven sensibly, on a run, mid 40s all day long.

SAAB 9-3 (150bhp derv) 55mpg on a run. Which for a heavy, luxury car, driven at speed limits all day, I wasn't dissapointed with. (also bearing in mind it was heavily laden)

1972 Mini 100 2000 miles around Europe averaged nearly 50mpg on 1 tank cruising at 60 on the French A roads. I think we average 43 for the whole trip including Switzerland.

1992 MK2 GTI 43mpg driving home 200 miles after I had just bought it. Steady 65ish on motorway.

1999 E36 318is, present car and I average 36mpg per tank +/- 1-2 mpg. Mostly commuting 450+ miles per week.
