1991 Mk1 Golf Rivage Cabrio

Hi all, bit of a long shot, and need some advice if possible.
My lad has just purchased a Mk1 golf Cabrio Rivage, due to pick it up tonight.
With any new car purchase, the first thing we always do, is change the oil & filter. Have got a filter this morning, and wondering what oil to use, ie, semi synthetic or mineral oil.
Any advice welcome.

Which engine does it have?

I use semi synth in my 1990 Golf GTi, if that is of any help

I always just used quality mineral oil, dont go to thin on these either, needs to be reasonably thick as now quite old and not a modern engine, needs to be decent quality as they run quite hot.

Its the 8v engine.
I have some vauxhall mineral oil 15w40 - SL/CF A3/B3.

I was going to use this initaially, and then get it changed when we get it serviced.

Or
Shell helix semi synth - 15w 40sae or 10w 40sae
