....because some of the chatter on here, particularly after Rowan Atkinsons smash, suggests it's a haven for Guardian and Daily Mail readers who have never driven anything faster than a Montego Countryman.

Here's a decent bloke, car mad, who has had an 'off', however serious, and he walked away from it. So far, we've had a stack of comments saying 'he can't drive' (when the Top Gear thing clearly demonstrates he can - those last two corners were race-driver quality!), he deserved it, or the car is rubbish and it was only a matter of time before this happened.

Shouldn't we be giving total and absolute respect for A driving a Maclaren F1 as a 'daily', B being able to walk away from an 'off' and C for generally being one of the greatest ambassadors for being a petrolhead that there is??

I despair sometimes, I really do

Stick around, despairing at posts on PH forums is often half the fun

I drove like a plum once, fell off the road and smashed up a very nice car. I deserved no respect for walking away from that. The other two points you mention, yes, respect for Mr Atkinson. But there is no shortage of schadenfreude here. Odd how such a British condition needed a German word to describe it.

Maybe this belongs in the thread regarding said incident?

I read pretty much the whole thing and I didn't see many people of accusing him of driving like a tit or saying he deserved it. In fact, most posts seemed to just wish him and his car well.

I haven't really read that thread but i'm very suprised there were those comments in there to be honest.

Oh and by the way, I find the Montego Countryman fast enough, and that if you had read this weeks SOTW, you would know that PHers do respect great Ambassadors wink

People have opinions and a forum is designed for discussion. If you don't like it, leave.

Also we don't know the full story, that road is notorious for people cutting it fine when the 2-lane bits go down to 1 at the peaks of the hills, for all we know he may have been taking avoiding action after one of the 320D tw*ts decided to take one more car....

I don't think he's disputing that it's a place for opinions, more that the opinions expressed aren't particularly 'petrolhead'. I'd have to agree.

Pistonheads is no longer a forum for "car people", its now a forum where peoples "piss boils" and where "mapped BMW" jokes are endless and hilarious. It stopped being a car forum a long time ago... More of a joke now than anything else.

Your definition of a petrolhead will be different to everybody else's. I don't cry at the thought of my car being scratched, I don't even wash detail it, to some this means I'm not a petrolhead. You can be a petrolhead and not like the McLaren F1, you can be a petrolhead and think that being a racing driver doesn't automatically make you a good road driver.

I think the real problem are the ones who start "This forum has gone to the dogs" threads every time someone disagrees with them. I've been here for a few years now, and nothing has changed.

Yes you have a point.
This particular section has more than its fair share of non petrolheads that should be on another site altogether, however there are so many forums on here that have a great many knowledgable people on them that if you avoid this section it is indeed a Petrolheads haven.

Errr - It's a forum for the opinionated - Haven't you noticed that? smile

If everyone said "Oh yes, every car is pretty good these days" or "All the F1 drivers are equally talented" it'd get a bit boring, I suspect.

Some people will think crashing a McLaren F1 marks you as an idiot, whatever the circumstances.

Clearly they're wrong, but so what? They're as entitled to their opinion as the rest of us!

How's it any different from all those people who say "Every FWD is crap and every RWD one is great"?
