My insurance ran out on 3rd August however I sorted my renewal out on the 1st via telephone with the same inusrer. Today I have received my new insurance docs. Also in the same post was a warning letter from DVLA/askmid advising me im not insured etc etc etc, a bit hasty! Nothing like giving people a couple of days to sort stuff out!

Im expecting some members of the public to receive such a letter from the DVLA one day which has plastered on the bottom 'Yes it is because you're black'

I can't see any problem. Usually people post on here complaining,

  • No-one reminded me my insurance expired, or
  • No-one reminded me my MOT expired.

What is this "insurance" of which you speak?

The letter was probably sent out prior to the OP sorting out his insurance, you know what Government departments are like, first class stamp is far too expensive.

I keep such things in my phone for it to shout at me two weeks prior to insurance or MOT ending etc. With more phones than people in the UK and all of them having such a facility theres not really an excuse for forgetting.

I didnt forget, i sorted it in time. The law does not say i have to sort it x time in advance.

So they help you out and you complain?

All the insurance info is held in a database (as you're well aware) and they try to assist you and you call them facist? Did they say you would be penalised for no insurance, or did they say that if you didn't renew you would then be penalised?

To be honest, I think it's a bit stty to moan about it...

I didnt say you did forget. I can see you didnt forget. I was responding to the point about how people often forget these things.

Yeah, but since you commit a serious offence immediately your insurance expires it seems a good plan for the reminder to be sent out in good time rather than a week too late....!

Where does to OP say he got a reminder exactly?

I can just see the DVLA sending him a letter clearly stating he is uninsured. A waste of their time and his.

It sounds like a good idea to me. People may genuinely forget their insurance is about to expire. The letter could save them a lot of trouble. Also, it gives the scum one less excuse when they get pulled for no insurance. Sorry pal, I think it’s quite a good idea!

It's a bad idea because, like road tax, people will become reliant on that letter arriving to tell them it's time to act. I'm not saying they should, just that many will.

Then one day the letter won't arrive, for whatever reason, and the DVLA will happily tell you it's not an obligation that they send you a letter and you are still bound by the fine.

I'd prefer it if the State placed a bit of trust in their subjects instead of treating people like an idiotic cashcow.
