Given this scenario;

2 identical cars, say a 2.0 SOHC Ford Sierra.

Car one you fit with a 360bhp motor but keep everything else standard.

Car two you can't touch the motor at all, but you can swap on different brakes, suspension, semi slick track day tyres and reduce curb weight by 100kg

Which would be the quicker round a race track?

Depends on the track.

How powerful is it as standard?

The more powerful one at the ring

The sticky tired one on a sprint track.

And how good the chassis was on the original car.

And, as Defcon has pointed out, how powerful the original engine was.

And how heavy the original car was.

And...

And....

...And this year's award for most meaningless question on an internet motoring forum goes to...

Standard brakes would get mullered very quickly on a track.

depends on the track, did you never play gran turismo?

whack a stage 4 turbo onto a mistsu GTO, push it up to 930hp. It will be good on the test track and High speed ring.
But it will be absolutely useless on Autumn Ring, or cote d'azur

er. No. Unless you're a total moron, in which case you emergency stop in every braking area.

A megre amount of mechanical sympathy and standard brakes are fine on track

I'm pleased to hear that all manufacturers have finally agreed to fit identical brakes to their cars.

Mine have all got different components, which can be terribly inconvenient when ordering pads and discs.

When did this major advance in standardisation take place then, Asterix?

Errrr indeed! only fine if you are doing 1 lap, or you are driving like Miss Daisy. At any sort of decent pace, standard brakes will be useless after 2 or 3 laps.

The OP specified 2 identical cars. He only gave the Sierra as an example.

Yeah the example being a normal everyday family car. Not something with high performance brakes.

Ok then - how about fitting a 360hp motor to one standard 997 Turbo S and then uprating the rest of the gear on another? Who'd be the fastest then?

Shall we stick with the OP's car?

The car with the decent handling will be quickest, I had a 300c 5.7 hemi with 340hp nice in a straight line but its back end would slide if you tried to go round a corner or roundabout at a decent speed. On the other hand my old 4.2 cerbera would not require much slowing down for bends at all because the handling was well set up.

No I prefer yours: much easier scenario.

Fair enough. Some motorsport classes insist on strandard brakes with only the pad material the only modification. This includes some of the classes on the N24 where they seem to manage fine.

I've managed a full day on track at Bedford in a 306 Rallye which was running basic, OEM spec pads and it was fine.

Top car though the Rallye - weighs bugger all as well. I'd guess that any 360hp motor is going to weigh more than a standard 2.0l Sierra lump putting even more strain on the stoppers.

Do the other classes specify standard brake fluid as well?
