It's with a company called Bentley Registrations. I've emailed them to enquire if it is currently for sale.

I'm confident it's mine as I have transferred it between several vehicles over the past few years, but not for the last 15 months.

If they say it is, what should be my next step?

A lot of companies do this, then if they get any interest they contact the owner to see if they are open to offers.

And the DVLA would just give them my personal details for a fee?

That's disgusting.

Confuse them by attempting to buy it.

"I'd like to buy it please."
"OK, I just need to confirm with the owner."
"I am the owner."
"Are you willing to sell it?"
"No."
"I'm sorry, you're not willing to sell it."
"Stick your numberplate then."
"confused"

Wonderfully tortuous.

Probably not.
Possibly your number was for sale a few years ago, that company might have seen it offered & advertised it.
Had you phoned them at the time they might have acquired it for you.
Ring them now & they may offer an alternative one.

Same thing happened to me recently a mate emailed me to ask why I was selling my number he'd seen it on a reg for sale website. Sure it enough it was listed, called them up and checked the details and sure enough, they had my details and it was my plate.

They also confirmed I last spoke to them in 1996 and had not been in touch since - hence it was still listed, 15 years and not one enquiry!! I have since asked them to remove it.

Better yet get your wife/gf/mate to ring to buy it then you can really play them as you can keep bidding it up etc only for them to end up with oh st yeah he already owns that.

I've had this - didn't think my plate was worth anything, but saw it advertised.

I recall it was L393 HAN.

I believe it was advertised at around £799.

So I contacted them and offered to sell it - they offered me under 200 quid for it!

Needless to say I told 'em where to go on that one.

If it's on retention did you pay the £25 yearly fee after it wasn't on a vehicle for 12 months. If you havn't paid it the DVLA may have moved it on.

Haha, see also the 'number plate valuation thread'. Asking price has nothing to do with value because most plates advertised for sale never actually find a buyer.

Why would the DVLA have to give them your details?

The number is common knowledge.

As far as I know you can write a letter (or email I guess) the DVLA and ASK them to forward it to the owner of a car (to research its history for example).
