Hi,

The turbo on my diesel volvo d5 has packed up. I am thinking about buying a second-hand turbo - is there anything that I can check on the turbo to make sure it is working properly? The second hand turbo I want to buy has already been removed from the car and the engine.

Thanks

Depends really buying online the seller will prob lie about it anyway -
I did a turbo swap on an s40 t4 the other day for a customer with a unit he bought on eBay - the replacement had nearly as much play in it as the one he was having replaced - just make sure there is no play in the turbine - dependent on price it might be worth enquiring about a rebuild it may cost a little more but least you know it's been done properly

The second hand turbo is £100. A reconditioned one is £250+ or a company local-ish to me can recondition my old one for £200 - if it can be reconditioned.

So apart from the play in the turbine, is there anything else to check?

Thanks again all.

Make sure the housing has no cracks, in particular check near the wastegate.

I would suggest that this will end up being a false economy.

I would recommend getting your existing turbo reconditioned from a reputable company who are willing to issue a warranty for the work.

£100 for a 2nd hand unit with NO idea what condition it's in or get yours reconditioned (which will have a warranty)for £200....
No brainer isn't it?
