Is there a 4x4 (suv) that is genuinely fun to drive? You know one that you can really lean on, clip apexes with, spurt out of bends, shift its weight around a bit and get into like you can with a decent chassis-d car ? Or shall I just get a Mondeo ST220 estate for about 5k and have done with it ? I drove a RRSport recently and found that it was aboout as non-sporty and wibbly wobbly as just about every other 4x4 ive had the displeasure of trying over the years.

If a Mondeo estate will meet your needs you clearly don't need a 4x4.

Mondeo ST220's are fantastic to drive , well equiped etc but for sporting SUV my choice would be a Porsche Cayenne.

They load fast 4x4s with electronic aids just to stop them falling over. High centre of gravity is a not a friend of good handling.

They've done a half decent job of making things like the Cayenne and X6 etc decent to drive but they've done it by making them more car-like hence the benefits of 4x4's arent included. They're just big blobby cars.

Things like the Chevrolet Captiva and Volvo XC90 (ive driven the former) are far from awful, not like my uncle's old Discovery which felt like it'd fall over in any wind, but i wouldnt put them in the 'fun' bracket.

I have a Cayenne S which is good at fairly rapid speeds, and is more responsive than many cars I have owned. I would not use it as a track car due to its significant weight, however. Its not really designed for it.

I've wondered about lower 4x4s eg Subaru Forester, Audi Allroad. Jackal do you need the off-road capabilities of a 4x4 or just the 4x4 set up ie would an Impreza suffice?

What about a Jaguar X Type estate in AWD guise?

^ I'm guessing it's for his wife, so it's "being a 4x4" is more about what it looks like than anything else. Would I be right?? wink

A Forester (turbo) is genuinely fun to drive, I imagine a Cayenne & supercharged RR would be too.

However, I defy anyone to say the Kia Sorento is anything but utterly horrendous to drive, MY 2009 but the worst handling car I have ever driven by a distance - a Bedford horsebox feels sporty in comparison.

No, i just like the idea of being high up and having lots of space. The few times I have done long Mway journeys in a 4x4 I have honestly found it a revelation in terms of stress levels and general well being. Maybe there is something about me which makes me particularly sensitive to the hieght thing. The thing is I also realise you need a FFRR or an Amazon to have space and those will be wibbly-wobbly-city so the 4x4 thing is kind of a conundrum that doesnt really add up. If a Cayenne can be a hoot to drive then that would be a good start but it looks more cramped than a Golf inside, let alone a mondeo estate.

I like the idea of a Forester STI. That would be a good car for filming out of as well, especially when you need enough speed so that the cars behind you can hold a nice slide without ramming into the back of you ... something which was a small problem recently with my 140bhp V70 !

In the UK do you guys have the Suzuki SX4 Crossover? Just by looks it appears to be the smallest 4x4 on the market. Italdesign did the styling if I'm not mistaken. I figured it must be pretty fun car to thrash.

I witnessed Scuffham driving a Grand Cherokee around Bedford. Aviators in my rear view mirror. Terrifying.

I have been very impressed by my 2003 forester, it is really nicely balanced and can hack along back roads at a pretty impressive rate, consdering its a normally aspirated one and out and out performance is not too special, it can conserve speed well through bends and has useful grip even on the tall profile cheapo tyres it came with.

I would imagine the blown motor, with decent tyres would be a properly quick cross country hacker

The answer has to be a Forester STI surely? I've not driven one but I've seen one giving it serious beans on track and it looked rather composed.

Bet it can be made to sound good, too!
