My first porsche
Discussion
Hi all, I've had a honda S2000 for about 3 years and its lots of fun but I've always wanted a porker of some description.
My budget is £8k max including choping in my 1999 s2000 which is probably only worth £4k max.
I dont want a classic or anything less powerfull than the honda so my choice is quite narrow, that choice being a boxter.
The 2.5 and 2.7 have less power than the s2000 ( 35 and 20 bhp less acording to parkers ) so the 3.2 would be the one to go for.
I would still like to test the 2,7 tiptronic though as its only a 10% drop and the power may be more linear than the peaky S2000
The car is purley a weekend toy as I have a company van and wifey has a 4 door pocket rocket.
I've driven the newer models at various porsche days at silverstone and found the tiptronic nice and easy to get on with, I dont know how this compares to the earlier cars though.
Obviously I will be looking at a 10+ year old car for my £8k budget.
Insurance is about the same as the s2000 ( already checked )
Here's the question what are the running costs like.
Service intervals.
Costs from decent independants who know there stuff ( I live in the reading area so if anyone knows of a one localy let me know )
Big mile items, the cars I'll be looking at will be on 80k + at a guess
Tyres, whats the average cost, can I get away with putting on cheaper rubber or is it a tyre sensative car like my S2000.
TIA chaps
I've already put this in the porker section so feel free to use this thread for personal threats, unrelated arguments and deformation of character.
P.S I have not and will never be a hair dresser although I did own an MX5 once

I keep looking at them too, often high milers (though not bad for the year). Servicing from what I've read doesn't sound too bad, but you're probably not going to full dealer a weekend toy anyway, are you? Suspension parts look to be the ones that need most attention at the 10 year mark from what I've seen

I think your budget should easily get you into a 986 3.2s Boxster. Try and get one with as many options as possible, it will help if you ever wish to sell and make the car much nicer to own.
We bought a 3.2s Boxster last year and it is one of the best cars we have ever owned, it is every bit as nimble and capable as a 911, if you can live with the badge snobery.
It is a buyers market

I went from an S2000 to a Boxster S some years back and would recommend you go for another later model S2000. You will get a 2004 with facelift, nice alloys, revised suspension and glass heated rear screen etc for about that money.
The early Boxster S handles quite well and goes ok, but I found it boring and wanting for loads more power. There was little difference between half and full throttle (unlike that lovely 9000RPM on the S2000.
They are quite close in actual performance but the S2000 is far more fun to drive, so depends what you want. I had the Boxter S only a few months and then switched to a VX220 Turbo (another great fun and much quicker option from around £10k now).
Some pics of all 3 follow. I had to put some decent alloys on the Boxster as standards were naf!

Wow that VX220 looks lovely!
My mate had an early Boxster S for a while and the thing that struck me was the noise - the engine sounds fantastic! I'm not sure I would see it as a considerable step up from your S2000 though.
As suggested above, perhaps a newer S2000 might be better? Or if you want more drama - a TVR?

This outfit is near J12 Theale and list their service costs. No idea on their reputation or how competitive though :

I've also looked at changing my MX5 for a Boxster.

Hi OP,
I went from a S2000 to a Cayman S, admittedly new MY08.
I didn't look at Boxsters as I wanted a tintop this time round. One thing you'll find different with the Boxsters you're looking at is that performance wise, you won't notice much on the road but I'd say that the Honda is far more dramatic and feels faster thanks to the power delivery. The P is far more linear and civilised.
One thing that I did love about the step up to the Porsche is the continuity of the control surfaces. Brakes, clutch and steering are all better - a lot. The gearchange in the Honda is one of the best there is but with a short shift kit, the Porsche feels fine.
I found the Cayman, and other Boxsters I've driven, do have a handling fluidity that is sublime - some say easy, I say bloody well sorted.
I still rate the S2K as one of the best cars I've owned but there is a definite step up to the Porsche in a few big ways and lots of other small ways.

I have just went back to a Boxster S after a 350z and a SLK32 - was meant to be a temp move type thing but really enjoying it at the moment.
There is a huge variation in prices in Boxsters and be careful of the cheaper ones as if it needs a couple of tyres a service and a few niggles sorted you would of been better off spending more initially to get a well sorted one.
If you can get one with a hard top as well - bug bonus
