What car for the mother in law....
Discussion
I'm trying to find my mother in law a car at the moment. She wants something reasonably cheap to run, big enough to fit 2 medium sized dogs, has to be automatic and around the £2K - £3K mark. I've narrowed it down to a few and personally I think the Honda is the best one but I thought I would throw it out to PH!
First there's this Megane. Now I know these suffered from electrical problems but I don't know whether this was resolved in later models and if so what year:

Peugeot 307 Estate:

Another 307:

My choice, the Honda. Although quite underpowered I suspect:

Another Civic, a little more powerful:

MG ZR, not sure about reliability on these either??

Audi A3 - potentially a bit old:

That's the shortlist so far, none of which are really cars I've ever been interested in personally so I don't know a lot about them. I just wondered if anyone has experience with any of them and can make some recommendations. I know Honda are renowned for being uber reliable (as are most Jap cars) and French cars are notorious for falling to pieces after 5 years but I could do with a few 'what to look for' tips other than the obvious. She is by no means a petrolhead so performance and handling aren't particularly important really more like boot size and colour

We've got a diesel pug estate coming off lease at work. To start with I hated it, but after 4 years and 60 k as a pool car I really admire it.
Not a straight panel in it. Serviced regularly and only broken down once it's been driven by scores of people.
Totally lacking in style, it somehow has a sort of shabby charm about it. Comfortable, with space for 4 and their kit, I reckon if given a wek in a body shop and a damn good detailing it would make the perfect dog taxi/shopping car/runabout for years to come.
