Does much go wrong with Jag V8 Auto's?
Discussion
Probably about 20 years too early to be thinking about a car like this. But absolutely lovely!

I'm sure a Jag nut will be along with more details soon, but there was the Nikasil engine liner problem that hit those V8s.
I looked long and hard at one of these.... Even went to see a few... Money pit, best avoided. Have a search in the jag section lots in there to put you off!check the history to see if the tensioners have been replaced, also it would probably have had an engine replacement in its early years for the Nikasil problems. Mind you by 125k any problems would have shown their face by now.
Other things check the foot wells are solid most of that age would have had a plate welded underneath, which is fine.
Overall I think as long as they have been looked after you should be ok. They are a lot of motor for the money and loads of them about so finding a good one shouldn't be too tough!
check out www.jaguarforum.co.uk its full of information and advice...

I'm actually getting fed up of self proclaimed experts putting down the Jag and the Nikasil engine. Yes in the early days there were problems and many had engine changes but if you find a Jag these days with a Nikasil engine, it isn't going to suffer from the problems back then and if anything the engines are now stronger. Just make sure that if you are going to buy one it is more important that the tensioners have been changed. I've had my Nikasil for 5 years now in a 98 XJR. Apart from servicing and brakes it has never ever put a foot wrong. I know others in the same boat as myself and they have also had trouble free motoring. Go for a test drive and check which questions you should ask the seller before you go. Just like buying any other car you are going to look at you would do your homework.TheD said:

Ask yourself why an equivalent SL is so much more expensive.
because it's German and all German stuff is overpriced. Mercs have their fair share of problems as well as any other make of car. But as with all things if you look after your tools they will look after you. So find any car that has been well looked after and it will run and run.alcovrugbyfan said:

Blah blah well maintained, no true Scotsman etc. I'm not suggesting Mercs don't have their own problems, and they're certainly less pretty than Jags, but Jaguar have a reputation for a reason. I've owned a few over the years, and they just don't 'feel' well engineered, and things do seem to go wrong with them far more regularly than the other cars I've bought. alcovrugbyfan said:
hey I don't mind Jags having a reputation, the more people believe what they read from the few bad experiences some people have had means that the prices are cheap!
Not complaining about that at all lol! You can get a hell of a lot of car for not a lot of money.
No questions about that, they are terrific value. However there's no point pretending that that XK isn't more likely than not going to throw some big bills at any potential purchaser. Not complaining about that at all lol! You can get a hell of a lot of car for not a lot of money.

Maybe it will, maybe it wont but will it throw more bills than any other marque provided the relevant maintenance has been done? i.e tensioners, regular service etc etc....alcovrugbyfan said:

And there it is, the refuge of MG/old Alfa fans the world over - relevant maintenance. Quite how regular, extensive and costly that maintenance is never mentioned though...The ZF 5 speed box in the non supercharged 4 litre Jags does cause problems, particularly if the fluid has never been changed. If the tensioners have been replaced the engine shouldn't give any trouble, but I've seen some terrible examples of structural rust on XKs. That does look like a bargain, keep £2k back for any work in the first year and you've still done well.

Well, my ZS has been flawless (apart from a tendency to eat clutch cylinder mounting brackets).
Can't say the same for my manager's A4.
Or my friends 3-Series.
However my brothers Mondeo, 820, 416 (mine too), father's 405 and my Primera have also been fine.

Here.
Remember, though, it's a £50-70K car and parts and servicing will reflect that
