Are There Any 2+2 Sportscars ?
Discussion
I freely admit I'm a huge MX5 fan as they are fun to while keeping speeds lower than the ban zone.
They also tell you what's happening under each wheel.
Recently I was looking for another car, ideally a 2+2 and bought an FD RX7 modified to produce 350bhp.
Whilst its definitely quicker than my 210bhp MX5 it simply isn't a fraction of the fun. It doesn't "talk" to me and it's because it's limits are so much higher its dull pretty much anywhere below 100.
A friend told me the problem is I'm used to a sportscar and the RX7 is a GT car.
Its only 200kg heavier and I'm struggling to think of a lighter 2+2 car that is more sporty than the RX7.
I do admit that waiting for the torque of the twin turbo doesn't help. So really I'd only consider supercharged or large NA engine and is MUST be RWD.
Thanks

Porsche too heavy, had a 944 Turbo - great car but definitely a GT.
I had a 911 too - hated it.
I doubt an uglier, slower rotary is the solution.
Cerbera - I'd forgotten about them - if I'd forgotten how unreliable by Griff was I'd have one.
So what's the nearest Cerbera competitor - preferably a bit slower as I have limited control of my leaden right foot.

Hmm, my experience of the FD is that it's at least the equal of the MX5 in terms of driver involvement, control feel, etc. This might be a silly question, but are you sure it's set up right?
I suppose the Evora might be worth a drive if it's within budget, but the rear seats are pretty much useless and it's still a heavy car.
If you're willing to go classic, an Elan +2 will run rings around an MX5 in terms of driving fun.

I've been wondering that too. It has Jap suspension that's a bit bouncy and whilst I have bills for £13k spent in the last few years none have been on alignment so I thought about having it checked. BUT I don't like the power delivery either. I'm sure if I was driving to the Ring its ideal but I tend to drive locally between villages and I find that as you come to an open junction at say 15mph I don't want to slam a car into first and there's a delay when pulling away in second until it gets into its stride.
TBH I've never liked any turbo cars the power delivery is just wrong.

I've considered an Elan +2 before... haven't driven one and really its a bit old but if I could find a rebuilt one its a possibility, would like at more power though. If you mated an Elan +2 and a Cerbera that would be ideal.
Well it's a car from the 60s, so you can't expect it to be blistering in a straight line, but they're light and feel an awful lot faster than they are. There's a few Zetec engined cars out there if you want a bit more grunt. I think at very least, you'd want a big-valve one (badged "S", I think).
ETA: They're 900kg and 130bhp, apparently. So it's not going to be blistering in a straight line.

As you said the key to the mx5 is fun at legal speeds then a std elan +2 is ideal If you mated an Elan +2 and a Cerbera that would be ideal.
Can get more power from the twink if needed though. 130/140 bhp fairly easily.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
