How the hell can a 6mph(!) bump cause over £3,000 worth of damage on one car?

£4.6k to fix damage from a 6mph bump. So much for bumpers...

What about the GTR that had a low speed bump, it set off the whole pedestrian safety system - popping the bonnet up. I think it was in the region of £11k.

When the whole car costs £10k, somethings might have to give a little.

I was just going to mention the GTR there were some pictures posted somewhere, didn't he run into the back of someone and the towball set everything off the actual damage was very small. tow ball size if i remember correctly.

I think there are now devices which can disable the pedestrian safety systems on the GTR.

But your point still holds, excessive repair charges for a minor shunt.

2K for parts? Volkswagen (or any other car maker actually) feels good. Car gets written off due to repair cost? That's one more new car sold. Win-win for car makers

Best avoid driving into rigid objects conveniently placed at the point where bumper and bonnet join.

Exactly, hitting another car that also deforms would lesson it an awful lot

This is why I advocate 5mph bumper testing such as in the USA

The test is equivalent to hitting another car of the same weight at 5mph and should result in no damage.

Would an insurance company be happy with that? Just wondering if it might get you in trouble if you have a crash a find you disabled a safety aid

Perhaps avoid hitting objects altogether?

See I thought Peugeots would fare badly, because the bumpers are so huge, but a 308, like my Mums comes off rather well, so I assume my 207 would act similarly. Result!

Odd about the MiTo, given how they park in drive/park in Italy... hehe

Still looks an expensive repair, bonnet creased - bet our Forester would fare well tongue out

I've just got my car back (2004, E46) having had £4k spent on repairs following a low speed shunt by my neighbour who reversed into it. On top of this is the hire car cost for 14 days.

No injury claim as I wasn't in the car and like to not take the piss.

Friend of mine went into the side of an IQ that turned right into a drive suddenly without indicating on his Honda CBR125R, £5k repair cost to the bike, which can be bought new for less!

And yes, I like to point out the fact that his aim was brilliant to manage to hit an IQ...

The GTR has acquired a bit of infamy for that pyrotechnic bonnet, but the same thing is currently fitted to other cars and they are likely to become more widespread.
