So, needed a runabout for a few months for a few hundred quid. Struggled to find anything decent locally til this came up.

1999 Honda Civic VTi 5 door, 110k, 11 months MOT. Bit tatty but seems honest. Cheap too. Anyone had one? First impressions seem good, it needs a wee fettle but nothing major. Should be an interesting smoker for a few months...

Firm I used to work for ran these as cars for the foremen. On and off site all day, ragged senseless, filled with tools and crap (literally, we were a sewerage outfit) and iirc one had over 150k miles at 5 years old. But they were great, never stopped. Were more reliable than the bosses M's and Disco's.

I think they're great. smile

Just saw it for the first time in daylight. No surprises thankfully, it's honest but a little neglected. Service, tidy up and it'll be fine. How easy are the cambelts to do on these? No history so might do that soon.

Don't bother if your only going to be keeping it for a few months.

Tough motors. Give it a oil and filter change and give it some high revs!

Driven a 1.4 version of one of these recently. Was pleasently surprised how nice it was to drive. It had some guts and liked to rev (and gave you some payback if you did so!).

I had the 'Aerodeck' version for a few years a while back.

Cracking engine, loves to rev, gearbox is light, and in 30-odd thousand miles of abuse, nothing whatsoever went wrong...

Friend has a Jordan that's got to be pushing 200k. He rags it mercilessly, rarely services it and the thing refuses to even think about dying.

As hard as nails.

I recently bought a 1993 CRX 1.6 Vtec as a daily snotter, and it's great. ~170bhp in something the size of a roller skate, but also returns reasonable fuel economy if driven carefully.

I had one of these, mostly a nice car for motorways as the handling is scary bad. Quick for what they are though.

If you're after some VTEC shedding then take a look at the Honda Preludes. ~200bhp, good handling and Honda reliability, great cars. If you can up your budget to 500-600 then you'd be in with a shout of picking one up.

Nice little shed.

Maybe worth getting an insurance quote before handing over the cash? I seem to remember that the insurance group on these was unusually high for a 1.6 hatch.

I've got the 1.4 16v version and I can confirm it is built like a tank, everything bar the backlit LCD clock on in the middle of the dash works. Mine is a bit slow though unless you give it full beans and it isn't very economical for a 1.4 either but I'll forgive it that for its comfort, reliabilty etc

In fact I'd love to upgrade to a VTI at some point, 2 x the power in my current steed sounds like fun biggrin

Yeah I realise that but if it was easy enough to change it'd make selling it on easier. I'll do oil and filters, maybe a set of plugs too.

Probably because the VTi has 30-40 more HP than your average 1.6 hatch.

Werent the 5 door hatches and Aerodecks 1.8VTI's? Or just the Aerodeck. Seem to remember them having a bigger engine size, but because of the extra weight was actually either same speed or slower than the 1.6VTI's.

1.6VTI = 160ish BHP
1.8VTI = 170ish BHP

Hence the hefty insurance costs. The factory 0-60 was between 7.9secs for the 3 door hatch to 8.5secs? for the Aerodeck.

Looks good dude, should give you good shedding value and enjoyment. If you're planning to keep it long I think there's a setup using suspension from the MG ZS which improves handling?

Yep, 1.8 170Bhp from the B18C4 engine (I think). Insurance was group 15.
I had one and loved it. The suspension is very soft for pressing on but springs and dampers can be had cheap and then you're left with a very well balanced car, with LSD as standard.
2nd gear is a bit long (swapping the Integra gearbox was popular due to this) but there's something quite satisfying about doing 0-70 in one gear.

The only common problem I know of with these cars is the fan for the heater blowing resistors, so setting 1 will fail followed by two then three (4 will always work as it bypasses the three resistors). New resistor pack £25 from Honda or you can solder new one's in for about £1.80
They don't suffer from the synchromesh issues the Prelude and Accord did, in fact I'm struggling to think of any other problems.

Blocked drainways can lead to damp carpets in the footwell and boot, and the heater fan can be quite ineffective if the pollen filter hasn't been changed (get one from Honda, they're cheaper than Halfords ~ £30).

I redlined mine on pretty much every journey, cruised at quite high speeds driving motorways at night and managed 29.9mpg in the couple of years I owned it.

ETA: if both fog lamps are intact I'll buy you a virtual pint. MB6 is the designation for the 5dr model should you be doing any more research.

Cheers for the info guys, its a big help. Both fog lights are humped so no virtual pint for me... Did a couple of hundred motorway miles over the weekend, the wee car feels pretty good. Pretty nippy and feels fairly torquey too, I am coming from a 1.6 primera as a daily driver tho...

May do the MG rear anti roll bar mod if I can get one cheap, other than that its a service and run it. Not even had it down a twist road yet...

Would have thought these handle quite tidily as its the same chassis as the MG ZS?

I have a feeling that stop gap will just keep going and outlast anything you subsequently get. My stopgap 190e is still chugging in the family 5 years later, I have been through many cars since! hehe
