Video: Under The Skin Of The New BMW M5

Looking for a 20-minute engineering geek-fest? You've found it...

The new BMW M5 is getting ever closer to launch and, while we've seen lots of shiny pictures of the new F10 M car, we've not been treated to a down-and-dirty view of the nitty-gritty of the car's engineering.

This trio of videos changes that, allowing you to watch as senior M Division engineers talk us through the finer points of engineering behind the car.

If you like the shiny bits of fast cars, but find the oily bits to be an uninteresting mystery, these videos will do nothing for you. If, on the other hand, finding out what makes a car tick is what makes you tick, then this will be 20 minutes of viewing that you should find well worth the effort...

Its not just an Engineering Geeks fest, its a German Engineering Geekfest and I love it. Ultimate tyre kickers in the video pocking a prodding the M5, but how did they get the chance to take a look around? Prospective clients on a waiting list? Who ever they are, they are lucky. Wonder if they get a test lap as well lol.

Love it! Its brilliant to hear how the engineers go about improving things and resolving issues on the entire car. Its lovely to see this synergy of the inherently intuitive feel of the car in the test drivers hands, and from there revisiting and tweaking the hardware (and software) to produce an end result which is and feels as perfect as it can be.

Bravo to the engineers.

Perhaps they're BMW dealers as one of them seems to want to have his say regarding the car as well as clarifying the engineer's message along with saying 'we' a lot. Customers get the option to pick up their car in person and have a guided tour of the factory.

Gotta love German self advertising - you can only do this on a BMW, because its not a normal car! LMAO.

Having worked for German firms for 10 years plus their self glorification always made me chuckle, two things rival it though, when they are comparing their product to something else German, that causes them a dilema, and when they get something wrong, that causes a blood clot.

Really enjoyed those videos. They show how much thought, time and effort go into M cars even after BMW have done their bit.

Next time I have a go at the new M car than Ive never driven as a cynical marketing ploy I'll try to be more considered.

Fantastic looking car in every respect, although it looks to me they are trying to justify the horrendous price tag.

Mind you, if i had the cash, it would def be on my short list.

it really makes ou feel the car is alive, more than sum of its parts. The passion, the sweat, that goes into it can be glossed over b the marketing.

excellent video, would love to see more of these.

All this talk talk talk about a car which will be slower and have poorer handling than a three year old GT-R. And please no one barge in here talking about the extra 2 seats of the M. If Nissan wanted with a year they could launch a 4 door gt-r. Bottom line this "technology" is nothing special and the new M5 will be a lesser car to drive, less enjoyable, less tactile, less nimble less comfortable than a freakin M5 of 1993. What a joke of a panzer tank bragging about all the metal required to hold it two tons up while traveling at 200mph- is this a B1 bomber or a car. j

In the second video @ ca. 4mins, does the speaker say that this V8 will sound like a 4 cyl. engine before going on to say, "more like a race engine"? I hope I miss heard that.....confused

I'm intrigued with the part on exhaust headers, designed so that each successive pair of cylinder feeds into the turbine on the opposite side, if I got it correctly...?

If this a flat plane crank then both successive cylinders should blow an even amount of exhaust gases to the opposite turbine, or how to extract most of the exhaust flow - simple but effective idea, wondering if others had thinkg of this before?!

This sequential feeding of twin scroll turbos, this thing must have zero lag at all.

Anyone got pictures of exhaust headers, they must have had fun designing them... I assume they didn't need to fit wastegates with twin scroll turbos?

I gotta admit as much as I prefer german metal to the GTR, (any german metal), I can never really come up with a good enough reason why, except to say that the jap version is unrefined and plasticky. Is that enough though?
