...I have 6 points on my licence from two sp30s the first being in april 09 and the second being september 10th

1.I've heard that the fact i have two sp30s would mean i would not be eligible to have classic insurance

Is this true ?

2.Also i always thought a car had to be 15 years old at least to able to be insured on a classic policy eg 1995/1996 M/N/P but then read about a gentlemen who had a nice 1998 jaguar xjr of which was insured on a classic policy

So what makes a classic car be classified as a classic by an insurance company

For the record i'm a 31 year old male with 8 years no claims and 14 years driving experience and no accidents and have a daily runner of which is insured seperately and my classic would be garaged/limited miles and not used to commute etc

Thanks for any information before hand

There's no legal definition of 'Classic' insurance, so it will vary from insurer to insurer.

I wouldn't have thought 2 SP30s would bar you and some insurers will insure cars over 10 years old on 'classic' (or modern-classic, or some such nonsense) insurance.

You may well find you don't need classic just specialist insurance. For example my MX5 which would class as a classic by most insurers is just as cheap through flux with a standard insurer on limited miles. Difference being clssic insurance doesn't accrue NCB this one does. Ok im limited to 3000 miles which is tough to keep to but its a 3rd car and we dont have much sun and the insurance is less than £250.

A classic is whatever the insurance company is willing to insure on a classic policy. I can see a '98 Jag being acceptable if it was a second car on heavily limited mileage and the owner was a member of a Jaguar club.

It's a standard answer but pick up the phone and ask. Depending on the car they'll see it as a classic. A 2001 Merc R129 SL on a limitted weekend policy woul be a classic. A 1995 Micra is not.

Phone a couple up, tell them what you want and see what they say.

I've had specialist insurance (kit car) with 2 x SP30's before, Footman James was the broker
