Rules:

Under £4k, ideally around £3k
RWD (Edit - or 4x4 but NOT off roaders)
Reasonable Performance
Reasonable MPG (30+ Ideally)
seats for more than two people (No MX5's, sorry)
Not too old, not too shabby, Good image (somewhat ruleing out BMW's frown )

Idea's so far:
BMW 5 series (can only get the old shape, tell me more about these!)
VX Omega (already owned one so would be a bit boring)
Merc's (C/E/S class, heard reliability can be an issue at the age I'm looking at, and the S class is big and therefore slow/thirsty)
BMW 3 series (E46 - possibly a little too small, wrong image)

Volvo S60 (Not RWD, but I do like it alot)

Someone help me with an out of the box suggestion that isn't Japanese, please???

Your "not Japanese" criteria rules out most of the best options, to be honest.

How about something like a Lotus Excel?

Actually maybe the 30mpg knocks out most of the usual Japanese suspects? Not sure whether it's viable to get 30mpg from things like Skylines?

Not sure this would meet your mpg criteria, but it looks like a lot of car for the money, and is a bit left field/ not japanese;

I'm sure you could haggle this down a bit, and it should be more economical than the Caddy too wink

It's actually really hard to think of many cars that fit those criteria though. Lexus IS200 aswell, but that's jap.

Very Tempted with the Caddy, scratchchin

The Lada is a daft price, no thanks.

Lexus is tempting (driving a brand new 60 plate IS220d hire car at the moment) BUT the ones in my price range are the older ones and a bit smaller, suppose I should add that being 6'6" Legroom is also an issue!!!

Isn't that car too old to have the facelift rear end treatment? Something fishy about that one potentially. I prefer the pre-facelift rear end anyway.

yep the new rear end didn't come in til late 2004. Something about that motor doesn't seem right.

did edit the original post to include "4x4 but not off roaders" when I realised I had missed out the X-Type completely!!)

Ah, so you did. smile

Will a V6 X-type really do 30mpg?
