a car failed its mot due to the fact that it's track rod ends had been excessively heated when it had its tracking done.

the mot chap said it's just a case of using a wire brush and greasing them to fix the problem, is this correct?

finally, washer jets for windscreen only work intermittently. sometimes water comes out, sometimes it doesn't (mostly it doesn't). There is enough windscreen wash in the car. any suggestions chaps

thanks

Windscreen issue i had with my e46, you dont say what car it is but the problem with mine was, where the pump goes into the washer bottle there was a small filter that had gotten filled with gunk. Took out the washer bottle, took the pump off, give everything a good clean, flush through, remove all green gunk, it was then spraying consistently right to the top of the screen. Im a complete mechanical retard but it only took me about 20 min.

Not quite. The rod ends will have been heated to free them if they were corroded onto the track rods. If they were heated excessively then the rod end seating material (usually derlin or nylon) will have degenerated. The rod ends are likely to be scrap, I wouldn't trust them.

Prevention is a case of greasing the track rods prior to fitment of new rod ends.

ok, thanks chaps, sounds like the windscreen issue could be simple

with regards to the track rod ends could you please tell me then if they are now knackered and how much the likely cost is to replace (classic carrera 3.2) - it had it's tracking done recently at a specialist so have they damaged the car? cheers

Also check the washer jet pipes and any T-pieces. I had this, bought new washer jets and no joy and it was driving me nuts - it was simply a blocked washer pipe T-piece which the MOT man kindly cleared for me smile

ok, thanks.

will it need new ones for definite then? or can the existing ones be fixed?

just reeling from the price of 4 new tyres that i'm having fitted and an expensive looking night ahead - that's a grand I wasn't expecting lol!
