I need a 4x4 for the snow. I'm looking for something reliable, cheep to fix, can tow a kit car, but most importantly is good in the snow. It would be great if it had a double cab and covered tail like a Warrior. I have around £6k.

What's the PH verdict?

Land Rover Discovery TD5? - Loads of space, great at towing and incredibly comfortable.

Fixed loads of things on mine for not too much money.

ETA: Mines for sale and you could have some change left over!

Or buy anything Japanese and you won't have to spend any money fixing it... tongue out

Toyota all the way. Land Cruiser or Hilux CC (or Surf or whatever they're called now).

What is the verdict on L200's? They seem quite cheep and you get a lot for your money. Are they all show and no go when it comes to the 4x4 system?

I have a friend with a L200 and he's very happy with it. He doesn't really use it other than on the road though. Sorry if that wasn't much help!

If you want it to be good on snow, it doesn't really matter what 4x4 you buy as long as it has winter tyres fitted. Test drive the jap pickups - if you can stand the cart springs on the back, buy one. If you can't stand it, but a Discovery.

I've got a Mitsi Challenger / Shogun Sport, which is to the L200 what the Surf is to the Hi-Lux . . . .it's a switchable four wheel drive, so spends most of its time in RWD mode

As a car used for towing / going to the tip / bad weather etc, it's not a bad car, ride is OK, interior typical Japanese, runs happily on derv / veg oil mix and for a large 4x4 isn’t as slow / bad to drive as the TD300 I had several years ago.

ETA, the biggest mechanical difference between the Challenger and L200 is that is has coil springs at the back and not leaf springs smile

ETAA . . . .for what is the lowest value car here (the number plate on it is worth two or three times as much!), it's one of the most borrowed . . . in this case "Mini_Lund" aka Tom borrowing it for a couple of days smile
