I went out today with some other p/hers for a blast around Northants:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Now, there were some really impressive cars out on that run (read e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e) and as much fun as I had, I can't help feeling a bit flat knowing that I'm probably not going to get the sort of money to buy a Ferrari or a McLaren or 911 Turbo / RS or similar. But it's got me thinking, what it was about the cars: the 'special' look, the sound when they started up and sped off and (I guess, 'cos I didn't drive any) the handling and the overall 'feel'. (Apologies for the crap description but I'm not a motoring journalist).

Could you get the same package w/out having to spend megabucks? I'm struggling to think of anything, other than a 911, that delivers some of the supercar feel, looks, power and sound w/out a price north of £20k.

I definitely wouldn't describe them as supercars, but various TVRs seem to meet that criteria. Fast/noise/feel/etc. Tamora?

As far as noise and off the line these give big smiles. You cant use the top end speed anyway.

I'd like to think I get some of that thrill from my little Exige. It certainly does seem to turn heads

My go-to would always be the Lotus Esprit, but that's just because I think it's the best looking supercar anyway. The old models look better but the performance is undoubtedly there in the later V8 model.

yes

I saw a burgandy Cerbera go past when I was out at the weekend (near the Mini plant in Oxford)- it got the senses tingling in a way that was conspicuously absent upon encountering an F430 and a Gallardo on the same outing...

To actually drive one really must be one of the more rewarding experiences life can offer... wobble

I agree. Whilst their looks might hold a candle to the cars you mention in your post OP, a 7 type car or atom sans-windscreen, is much much more of an occasion to drive simply because they are so different to what you'd be used to. They're a world apart from a cosseting modern supercar or scary 80s supercar. I cannot think of a more memorable driving experience than being in a Seven or similar on a warm sunny evening in the countryside, just as the air is starting to cool bringing with it that unique aroma that is English countryside. The smells combined with the way they just dance down the roughest of B-roads when you key into how they need to be driven is unforgettable and what driving is/should be about.

10k will get you a car that will do 0-100mph in under 10 seconds too, so you'll get your performance kicks as well.

Exige S - surely a thumbs up in the looks department and a large part of the performance / handling?!

+1. Faster than most supercars round a track too if that's your thing (probably because you can drive it harder)...

I'd go for something like this personally, although I might be biased...
