Hi,

I was at a cousins house yesterday. He has just acquired a very nice looking MK5 GTi. Really looks the business...

He stated he was getting minimum 35mpg on a run and even 40+mpg on the motorway! eek Thats brilliant for the motor IMHO..

Kinda put my faith in diesels to the test. I have always yearned after a diesel due to my wife commuting stupid miles for work (120mile round commute). However, she is now working closer to home and doing minimum 20-40 miles a day now...

So what to do now....?

GTi prices are looking very attractive, but so is a 170bhp GTDi + remap....

What would you guys go for???

I assume it all comes down to total number of miles per year? And i assume the GTi would most likely be more to insure possibly...?

We get the same from our MKV GTi. I find it doesn't get much above 30mpg around town, but on trips of more than 3-4 miles the economy is just fine (I tend to use my Panda around town as it never drops below 40mpg). Plus you're not driving a bl00dy diesel. Guy down the road from me has just got a brand new Q5 2.0TDi. I sounds awful, clattertastic - warm or cold.

Yeah i kind of agree. I have become a fan of petrol.

My daily runner is a Z4M. She currently runs a Fabia VRS MK1 which has been remapped to 180bhp.

The VRS is a cracking motor, but it seems my cousins GTi is so much more car for the money. Plus a lot more fun and a much more comfortable place to be...

Just don't want her moaning about running the thing as she only drives the Z4M if i am paying! rolleyes

We had two golf gti pool cars at my old place of work.

I'd have thought 35mpg was achievable but ours generally only managed high 20's, most driving was quite A roads and motorways

Good fun cars though, I'd definitely consider one

Pool cars - not owned or fuelled by the drivers. Say no more driving

You can get decent economy (42 i've seen from my MKV) on a long run, but it's a real exercise in patience, that frankly I don't have.

Still, a bit less mpg has still got to be better than listening to the diesel clatter.

Then factor in the lower cost of petrol compared to diesel, no DPF's etc I'd say the GTI would be a great choice!

Same here, our GTI averages 28 mpg and that's a mixture of town/motorway (well M25) traffic. My 3.0i Z4 gets better mpg!!

This may be madness, but I use a MK5 GTI for 20,000 miles per annum.

  • For me a couldnt find a quiet 4-cylinder diesel hatch and didnt want a Mondeo class size
  • Compared to the 140/170PS Golf diesel, the GTI is more refined, especially in town, has a lighter nose and better seats
  • Insurance on the GTI will be more
  • Both come with either 17" or 18" wheels and will consume tyres at about the same rate
  • Fuel, constant town = 25mpg, otherwise my last three tanks have been around 39mpg.

Yep, my best so far on a 30 mile commute (mixed roads and M4):

Get about 35 mpg in the GTI on my usual mixed runs - on a longer journey can touch 38-40 mpg quite easily - as context that is at 70-75mph with air con on.

What I would say is for the performance the GTI is very cheap - £100 for a major service at a VW main dealer (if you go onto the service pack) and insurance £300 (vs. my old M3 which is now £1300).

Just make sure you get one with the water pump and cambelt changed.

Overall do it - brilliant cars, especially if you hit some back roads.
