I am goign to change my car next yeat for something fun, my wife no has it in her head that all performance cars get stolen by violent thugs as a Subaru Impreza was stolen in Cheadle which isnt so far from us and the guy was battered with a steel bar so she now gets paranoid about anything overtly sporty, is this really a big risk, I would have thought premium SUV's are more at risk than say 10 grands worth of E46 M3 and a neighbour has two RR Sports, another neighbour has had a Focus ST for 4 years without incident.

What cars are targetted, I need to reassure her that we wont all be murdered if I get something a bit more interesting than a Saab !

I personally wouldn't worry about it ... life is too short! It seems a shame to choose your next car on the basis of whether you'll be brutally attacked and hi-jacked. To be honest, I don't think a E46 M3 will stand out.

If you start letting that sort of thing bother you, you are on a slippery slope to hermits-ville.

Just buy the car you want, be observant, dont drive through the ghetto in an expensive car with your rolex covered wrist dangling out the window at 1am and you should be fine.

Buy something that doesn't scream performance but still has it. These crims tend to go for the sort of motors they'd like to own- stickered up Impreza with a stupid spoiler, RR sport etc etc. I suspect a debadged E39 M5 would go under the radar.

Fast four-door cars are the ones that get stolen by career criminals (the ones you don't want to meet). It was sort-of explained on a episode of traffic cops, the police bought Accord Type-Rs to chase "normal" cars then Accord Type-Rs started being stolen so the police bought Imprezas and Evos etc. If you buy a coupe or something slower than a police car you'll be OK, unless you're the type to leave your back door unlocked and hope the dog will take care of security.

Cheadle. Not exactly midnight in Johannesburg, is it?

Tell your wife to stop being a mental.
