Cost of moving number plate

I am moving a private plate off one car, then keeping it on hold for a few weeks and moving it to a new one once one is found.
My wife just called the DVLA and was told this will cost just over £100!!!!!

Is there a cheaper way of doing this?
Is the DVLA just taking the piss out of us now?

No cheaper way I'm afraid.

This has been the case for years. £105 for 1 year retention (inc transfer to new vehicle) or £80 to do a direct transfer from one vehicle to another.
