When you budget drops below £3-4K you stop looking for a specific car and look at everything on-offer, on-merit because it's a minefield of possible bargains and decent cars interspersed with mispriced crapola and outright sheds.

Mileage shouldn't scare you off a well-made car, nor one noted for cheap and easy repair - every car needs to be seen in terms of what it's got/what condition it's in and (and this is a biggie) stuff like MPG and insurance costs.

I'm guessing how it LOOKS is a big thing here so we're going to struggle to help, really...

That looks pretty good. I'd avoid Corsa Sxi for a young driver the insurance premiums are rediculous due to all the dheads crashing them

Granted some may not be her taste but as others have said, at £2k/£1.5k you can't be set on a certain make/model if you want it soon. You could be there months waiting for the perfect car. I hope I found something she likes.
