Currently I'm driving the short (1 mile) to work as I need to have my car moved from its spot every day. I then come home at lunch, park in the 1 hour parking then go back. Then return home at 5 where I can park in my spot again.

Its stupid to drive 1 mile to work, I know, but I can't do anything else with the car. If I go leave it on a street with no restrictions, I then have a 15 minute walk when ever I need the car. Pointless!

I'm looking at down grading to a small motor, to keeps costs down. The other half will keep the nice car for weekends.

So, is a diesel good for (very) short journeys? Or do I just go for a small engined petrol car? I want to get something with low tax, small wheels (for cheap tyres), cheap to fix. I'm thinking old Polo/Golf.

Panda 100hp, on the other hand would be perfect.

Pug 107/C1/Aygo even better.

Diesels do not like short journeys, so small petrol is better for your needs. Or a bike.

I knew I'd get this...

I need a car outside of office hours. So you're suggesting ditching it 15 minutes walk away down some area cars are frequently broken into?

With the car, I get to have 30 minutes more in bed, come home for lunch/do chores in town, get home 30 minutes earlier and be able to dash out the house without a walk to the car.

I'm telling you I want a car, don't knock my decision, either help with my questions or fk off.

Okay okay, but have you considered a push bike?

Start walking on 2 legs, not on all fours, it's much quicker wink

But seriously, it's not really a good drive for any car, but I think worse for diesel. Can you not get a residents permit or anything similar for the restricted parking, or is it a blanket restriction?

Small fun petrol would be ideal. Diesel would be a complete waste. Dare I suggest that a Prius or similar would actually be well suited to this kind of journey?

Doing very short trips in any car will not be especially good for it. I'd buy a small engined petrol car that warms up quickly and take a longer route to work.

A diesel for a 1 mile comute is a waste of time.

I've evaluated all of the options. Trust me. I want to use a car, stop questioning why. This isn't the lounge, if you want to try and be funny, head over there.

Its on a high street, I can get residents parking, but again, its not close to my house. There is parking outside it, but its for 1 hour between 8am and 6pm. Hence why I currently drive to work.

Now, can people just answer the questions I posted, rather than going off on a tangent. Thanks.

Good suggestion, an Air cooled 50 2t would get nice and warm, and if you make your own premix or crank the oil feed up you can have a lovely smell of 2t each morning cloud9

I've thought about it. I'd need to get a CBT and all the gear. I'm not going to ride without good gear on. Which probably means it'll take just as long as walking. And in the winter, I'll get soaked.

But, there is motorcycle parking very near to the house. So it'd be good for parking.

No diesels aren't good for short journeys....more accurately, as has been pointed out, they take longer to warm up than petrol. Having said that, 4 x 1 mile journeys each day isn't good for any engine so just find the cheapest thing that moves and who cares whether it's diesel or petrol.

True. You can get Moped's with those covers on, but I dont think anyone could bear with the shame of being seen on one.

Little petrol it is then. Get a banger 106 and disregard any electrical problems that stop it from moving biggrin

That's the answer - teeny small petrol engined car, of this sort of type.

This ^

My banger 106 cost £700, had no expensive problems in 8months ownership (exhaust did snap on saturday rolleyes) but I've done 13k miles. I'd recommend a Zest like mine. No electric windows, no central locking, no power steering or ABS. Theres less to break. I made this point to my brother who bought a 1.5d 106, his central locking broke within a week. Point proven smile
