After a bit of advice on where I stand on this one.

I had one of my cars covered with a certain insurance company. I have been moving them all over to a multi car policy with Admiral over the last 12 months. A month or so before this one was due to expire, I received an email from this company saying that my credit card had expired so, if I wanted the policy to be renewed, to log on to my account and update the card. As I didn't want it to renew I did not do this.

A couple of days before expiry, I then receive an email saying that cover had been renewed and the payment has been processed. I then log into my account and find that the expiry date of my card has been extended to 2020, which I did not do. It's 8 years beyond the correct expiry for the card. They will not have had the security code for the new card though.

I contacted them straight away about it, only to be told that there was no way they would have changed the details, it was obviously renewed in error and if payment was taken it would be refunded immediately.

Due to being away with work for the last month or so, I didn't follow this up regarding the changed details. I have found today that not only had the payment gone through on the card, it has not yet been refunded several weeks later. I've contacted them today and they are now saying that they haven't been able to refund the payment due to the card being expired.

I'm annoyed about this to say the least. Any advice on where I stand with the insurer and the credit card company? This feels fraudulent to me.

Assume you have been set up for a Continuous Authority card payment. Nasty things.

CVC is irrelevant for these (and PCIDSS prohibits them being stored anyway). As is expiry date.

Only the first transaction needs verification, subsequent transactions are flagged as being continuous authority and just go through. And you can't cancel them, only the insurer can !

However, to do a card refund you DO need a valid card. Hehe !

Slightly tricky issue as you should have cancelled the policy rather than just letting it lapse - but I think talking to your carD company will get the money refunded quicker than talking to the insurer.

Other way round I would imagine. The Card Issuer will simply claim that the insurer said you said it was OK, and it is down to you and them. That is the problem with Continuous Authority Payments.

Apparently so, which is why they have not yet refunded me as I found out today.

Sounds like it's down to me to sort out then.

Thanks all.
