Probably the microswitch which needs replacing.

I had a Focus MS replaced about a year or so ago. All in, it cost me a little over £90 IIRC.

You will be able to open it from inside the boot, normal a wee leaver at the bottom off the lock. Most likely the switch has failed.

I had a Mini Cooper on which the boot lock failed without warning. It turned out the Mini has pre-empted the problem by fitting a manual boot release under the rear seat squab. Maybe VAG think the same way?

Wife's Zafira had the same problem. Boot catch was on the same fuse as the washer jets and it had blown! 20p fix

Sorry, must admit I was having an immature moment at the time. Excited about a trip to London tomorrow with my Brothers.

Hope you get it sorted pal!

This happened to my forester a while ago, I spent an hour taking the tail gate trim apart to get to the mechanism , cleaned it all up lubed it put it back together and still no joy. So drove down to the local subaru agent who opened it first time without any toolscurse

its a mechanical system on the forester - none of your fancy audi micro switches, which has a habit of gumming up sometimes

Central locking on the Mk1 A4 is pneumatic so if the others are unlocking it could be a vacumn leak. Other than that the lock mechanism is jammed etc.
