Looking to get a cheap runaround for dogs/kids/bikes etc that can take a bit of stick and have always liked the look of the Jeep Cherokee (old late model - 1997).
I see you can them now for under 2k but with that big 4L engine it wont be the cheapest thing to run.
The big engine is partly why i want one but i've seen a couple with an LPG conversion. Any pointers on what the benefits are from this and will there be a big saving on fuel? Is performance affected at all?
Will be mainly used in town and B roads and minimal dual carrageway use. 8-10k miles per year.

Just bumping this to the top because I'm interested in the answer.

Might be worth a post in the "off road" forum as well.

bloke I know ran one, got ~ 17-18 mpg on the motorway on gas so you can work out the costings from there.

LPG conversiosn range from cheap and very uncheerful to quality reliable things so it is dependant a lot on the quality of the kit and convertor.

I've got a '98 Grand Cherokee 4.0 with multi point (expensive for previous owner!) LPG.

I've had it a good 3 years now and touch wood, its had no problems.

It costs about £38 to fill the LPG tank, it will normally do 160-180 miles on that, although my dad borrowed it and managed 230!

I use it for towing all of the time, usually heavy cars on a trailer, and as you are going slower with the trailer, it still does 150 miles to the £38.

I really like it, but i keep having thoughts of a newer replacement.
