Is there a medical condition for people that keep wanting to buy cars? Because I think I have it!

In the 9 years i've been driving I have owned;

2002 Polo 1.2 S
1991 Polo GT
2004 Polo 1.4 FSi
2005 SEAT Ibiza Cupra TDi
2005 Audi A4 2.0TDi S-line
1982 Audi Coupe GT
2007 Audi A3 2.0TDi S-line
2008 VW Golf R32 DSG
1990 VW Jetta 1.8GL
1995 VW Corrado VR6 (Classic Green)
2001 Audi A6 Avant 1.8T quattro
1995 VW Corrado VR6 (Aqua Blue) - still owned
1999 Honda Accord Type-R - still owned

Admittedly, the A4 met it's end with a tree and the A6 was put into a wall when I was hit by a drunk, uninsured and banned driver earlier in the year furious but you get the point. If anything the fact i've cut back on car spending (house to buy!) has meant i'm now changing my cars faster than when I was buying the expensive metal!

I think because I saw the 75 unveiled at the Motor Show i've always had a hankering for one and having seen some of the ridiculous prices these are going for I really fancy taking a punt at a MG-ZT 160 V6. I've heard the V6 is more reliable than the K-series so hoping it should be easier to find a trouble free one. The downside is the Honda Accord Type R would have to go; it's a great car when you're in the mood but a pretty dire daily driver, just too thirsty and noisy inside.

Funnily enough, there's one at my local Manheim Auctions on Thursday and I imagine less than £1500 would see it mine biggrin

So, am I mad? Should I scratch the itch? Anyone got any opinions on the V6? I know it's woefully underpowered so I don't have any worries about performance, but I do like a V6 engine lick

Watch for water pumps on very high mileage examples (worth changing at the 90,000 mile belt service) plus the VIS electronic valves - electronic motors that control the flaps on the variable length air intakes.

Isn't the 260 the RWD model with the Ford V8?

Must admit I have a very soft spot for Bill's Supercharged ZT-T...

This.

260 = FORD V8 RWD
190 = 2.5 KV6 FWD

I've always liked these too. Something about them.

Sorry, the 260 is indeed the V8 version. Which if I could find one within a 150 mile radius Iof my house I would probably snap up. I hear they are amazing fun biggrin

The one at the auction is advertised as a V6 160bhp, I understand this was a short lived engine and replaced in early 2004 by a K-series 160bhp engine.

The 260 is the rear drive V8, very unlikely to come in at £1,500.

The V6 is either 2 or 2 1/2 litre. I had a ZT190SE and really liked it. The SE has pretty much all the toys as standard. The only downside was quite low gearing (manual lower than auto) so not a very lazy cruiser and not very economical on fuel - no more than 35mpg on motoway and probably no more than 20 around town.

I had it on the company so not sure about maintenance costs, the only non routine maintenance I needed was a replacement fuel pump.

Heres the car in question, looks like it needs an MOT too so might be a really cheap motor...

Can't see it going any more than £600-£800. I think it has been there a couple of weeks as well.

They're all K series engines.

All the V6's are 2.5 litre KV6 units either in 160 or 190ps state of tune. The 160ps 2.5 litre KV6 was dropped in favour of a 1.8 litre 4 cylinder K-Series turbocharged to 160ps in about 2002/2003.

My dad has two, an immaculate 190 and my mums Diesel 135 Auto, I really like them, well built, I think they look good, V6 makes a nice nice, ok its not really fast but you cant call it "Woefully Underpowered", my uncle has the 260, makes a really good noise and is quicker than the V6 but again not stupid fast.

My folks had a Rover 75 for a while. I liked it, I thought it knew what it was meant to be and was very good at being it - very comfortable and relaxing to drive, made no attempt whatsoever to be sporting and the car I would choose if I were three points away from a ban and needed to discourage myself from speeding. It would be interesting to drive a ZT, I can't imagine much of what I liked about the 75 is left but perhaps something else has been added.

The ZT in question bid to £300 provisional.

Got to love the panel gaps on those things. They look like they've already been crashed and badly repaired from the factory.

And people wonder why the company went bust.

That's a pre facelift one and shouldn't look like it's already been crashed. It's probably been crashed though.

I've got a 75 with a non turbo 1.8. It's slow (11 seconds to 60) but the ride is wonderful and the seats are nice and squishy - it's like driving a pair of slippers.

I think they are pretty good cars, for a big FWD barge they do handle very well.
