Hi guys,

I know the Musso has a Merc 2.9 engine "under license" but does that mean it is exactly the same as a Merc 2.9 or could they have downgraded parts ?

I have a Sprinter 316 with the 5 cylinder 2.9 diesel engine has a couple of issues and so I'm looking around for a replacement engine.

It seems that I can buy a complete Ssangyong / Daewoo Musso for the price of an engine and at least then I can see it running etc I simply don't trust dismantlers nor reconditioners as I've seen what some of them do.

BUT IIRC my sprinter has 160bhp and the Musso only has 120bhp so does anyone know what the differences were ?

Also I presume a non turbo 2.9 is has different pistons etc to a turbo 2.9 as I can get a non turbo engine far cheaper.

Thanks

JM

I'd imagine there are various differences between the engines, but maybe it's just different mapping like the Vito vans, all the same basic engine, just different maps to give different performance levels (in the 2.2's obv the V6 is different)

If my mate's experience is anything to do by, Musso's get the engines which fail any kind of quality control at all.

He bought a Musso on the strength that it had a Mercedes engine, and got rid of it after the 3rd replacement engine. His old Merc which apparently has the same engine, is still going strong and over 400,000 km.

I've spoken to a breaker who thinks the Musso had the old 2.9 and I need the ML 2.7
