Help me out here chaps. We're expecting another little one at Christmas and the Mrs needs some bigger wheels. She currently has a 5 Door 150hp Golf (Mk 4) TDi - great car but not big enough for what we need.

The requirements are several fold:

1) £10k budget
2) Must be an estate / 5 door
3) I want something I can borrow from time to time for a bit of a hoon
4) Ideally RWD or 4WD
5) BMW 3 series touring about the biggest that will fit sensibly on the drive

Initial thoughts from me is an E46 BMW 330i M Sport Touring. I reckon I could get a decent unmolested model with sensible miles well in budget.

Any other thoughts? She tends to do all the girls things in her car - that means crashing into things, scratching it, filling it full of food and kids crap etc so I need something robust.

One last question: I was tempted by a Golf Mk 5 R32 but it is just the same size... Did VW put that engine in the Passat?

Impreza wagon? VW put the 2.8 VR in the Passat, as well as the W8 and also the R36 engine, but I've no idea which engines were available when and if all were available in estate form. I'm also not sure if the R32 engine ever made it into the Passat.

330i M Sport would be my choice also. My fiancee had a 320d touring and came from a Corsa B so had quite a large jump! She never kerbed the wheels or had a problem parking it (many are fitted with parking sensors), the only problems we had with it was the engine, however you won't have the same issues on a straight 6 petrol, they are bomb proof!

Think you're on the right lines with the E46 330i touring. Could probably get a leggy E90 for your budget, as well.

Alternatively, how about an Impreza WRX wagon?

This is a hostile environment to admit it but I just don't really do Japanese cars I'm afraid. European all the way...

Interesting engines there in the Passat, will research that a bit. Ta.

Hmm, I do like being right... smile

Re low miles E46 vs high mile E90 I'm really not sure which way to go.

I suppose I'd want to keep to about 60,000m tops but could be convinced otherwise with solid FBMWSH I guess.

Well, well, well, seems the E46 is a whole lot cheaper than I thought...

I was just about to suggest that. I'm guessing a B5 RS4 is a bit too old and also doesn't want to be scraped along car park walls, etc.

That seems good value, though it is a tiptronic.

This looks tidy too.

Just struggling to see my little blonde piece in a V8 though. It stirs something in my pants though...

BMW 330D M-Sport Touring E46. If you want a manual, they aren't a huge amount about. Auto is a bit more common.

10k should be plenty. They start at around 6-7k for a very leggy one.

SEs are slightly cheaper and it should give you more cars to choose from Seats aren't as nice though.

I'd rather have the D compared to the petrol one. Looks like there will be another 8p going on top of prices at the pumps ad they won't do much for prices of thirsty cars like the 330i. Also, I think the late 330i cars fall into the £400 tax bracket.

My wife had a E46 325i touring when we had our nipper. It coped admirably with all the baby junk in the boot and I quite enjoyed driving it. She's now got an X1 as we don't need to cart so much stuff about....

and is pregnant rolleyes

OP, what did you buy for your "little blonde piece" in the end?

Those S4 Avants do look very tempting.
