I've got a lock-up garage. There have been a few forced entries round my way recently. On the assumption that it's sensible to fit a new lock (query whether a big f*ck-off lock denotes there is something worth nicking inside (there will be- my car)), what do people think is the best solution? Don't want to spend a fortune, could fit something basic myself probably. Will also nip down to the local locksmiths tomorrow for a gander/chat with them.

It's a lock-up, so not attached to my house- locks operated from the inside only are out.

Cheers,

Richard

Sorry, up and over. The current lock is a bit crappy, the handle is at least 20 years old, it's one of those "lift up" jobs rather than a "T" one. I've stuck a big padlock on it for now (through a hole in the handle which stops it being opened) but need something a bit more robust methinks.

Something that locks it at either side to the ground or bottom of the wall if possible.

My lock-up garage has a "Garage Defender" like this: http://www.sasproducts.com/acatalog/Garage_Defende...

My landlord will attest to how difficult they are to defeat when he lost the keys before handing it over to me!

If you're serious about security it's best to instal a rising pillar which can lock into place when the car is parked. Then even if some scrote forces the door they still can't have the car.

As for locking the door, huge visible padlocks have a useful double effect - deterrence and security.
